Yea I don't understand that either, I'm just happy this market is expanding more awesome bad ass rwd cars for us to have the pleasure of driving. There was a time when people said cars such as that wouldn't have a place in the world, and now car companies are looking and seeing crap the market still exists and we can get some piece of that cake.

Maybe Toyota is capable of getting other tunes from around the world whenever they want?

So, let me get this straight. in a thread in which people are questioning the reliability of a Subaru and Toyota (of which there is very little data mind you) people are mentioning Alfa Romeo and a brand new Ford Mustang platform as viable alternatives??

I feel like I have entered the Twilight Zone..

Lol no, we were just wondering what future cars the one person was looking forward too, he was thinking that the FRS might not be a viable car for him in the future with all these other RWD sports coupes creeping up in the market. So sort of yes and no to your question.

Yea don't worry till that bank one DI o-ring blows then you may throw a rod totaling your engine and when it happens after 60k mi your out $8k.

No biggie, No TSB needed. Who cares you'll have another new car by then, right ? No explanation needed, you have the cash to not care.

But most people in the US buy Japanese cars (especially Toyota) because the dam things last forever, it's the number one reason Toyota overtook GM to become the largest OEM in the world.

Certainly didn't by this car for the power, the fuel economy, or utility. Its a well balanced sports car that I want to drive hard. I would never had bought it without the Toyota reputation. Toyota engines (and even pre 96 Subaru engines) are known to last forever and take a beating. This is the main deciding point for many who bought this car: Toyota reliability and durability.

With the lack of any concern or TSB from Toyota regarding this issue for going on 6 months, I wonder if this is why it is branded Scion here.

But I'm not about to lay down and play victim and Russian roulette with $25,000.

Should I have to budget an extra $600 to buy BRZ-edit load the SA tune and look for other issues causing detonation? Or possibly risk losing warranty and buy an Ecutek tune.? A hassle but maybe worth it?

@regal Why don't you send your concerns as above over to Toyota customer services and let us know what they say?

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but I don't think you can extrapolate failures experienced in a racing environment to normal street use. Even if you drive "spiritedly", you aren't going to put as much abuse on your car as one that is strictly rented for people to drive to the limit every time it goes out. I mean, you could look at that and say "oh, brakes wear out way too fast on this car" or "suspension sure fails quickly" - but those are both conditions of the environment of use.

Also, saying "100% failure rate" is a bit loaded when the total number of vehicles isn't given. I mean, do they have 10,000 cars in their fleet or 5?

Are you saying that the BRZ has a different tune than the FR-S? Not saying that you're right or wrong, but this is the first I've heard of it.

Honestly? I think if you are this concerned about the car you should sell it and get a Camry with an extended warranty.

If reliability and warranty are you primary concern with this car, the last thing I would recommend is modifying the engine in any way that might void your warranty. And yes, modifying the ECU very well may void the warranty.
