You guys are depressing me with the expected price. At the rate I'll just go get an S2000 to dd then look for an E30 to turn into a project or something.

You guys can speculate all you want. We all are just going to have to wait. The FR-S price won't be released until the New York Auto show which starts April 8th. I think once you drive one, you will realize that the FR-S handles like a $50,000 plus sports car. For $25,000 it will be a steal, even with less amenities than other cars in that $25,000 price range.

I'm convinced that the price announcements will never come. We should have known ages ago.

They rave about its light weight, great handling, overall responsiveness and "fun" factor. They lament that it could use and the chassis could handle a "little more power, especially torque". Toyota says they will release the car in "limited" numbers to test the market. Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Road and Track among other automobile publications predict the car will sell for "around $20,000".

The car was finally released as a late 2000 Model. The Toyota MR2 Spyder's MSRP was $23,089!

Today!

Does any of this sound vaguely familiar? I think it certainly shows precedent. Most the car magazines have suggested the price of the FR-S will be around 25K and that the BRZ will sell for less than 30K. This is 12 years after the MR2 sold for 23K. As much as I would have loved to see the FR-S base price at 22K I fully expected it to be 25K. That Toyota has apparently priced it only $900 more than I expected shows restraint on their part.

...I am just glad that Toyota/Subaru built it in the first place!
I just want to see this again. It's so... logical. :happy0180:

Wht you think is affordable may not be the same as what other people think is affordable. An affordable sports car does not mean that the car will be affordable to just anyone. A sports car is a luxury item which already puts you past the price range of most cars out there. There aren't many sports cars out there right now and most of them are quite expensive ~$50k+. The 370z is an affordable sports car. Based on performance this car should certainly be less but don't expect to think because you can afford a new chevy cruze or malibu that you will be able to buy this car.

Sure, they may not have the low CoG, or the LSD, or the many other features that we covet in the FRS/BRZ, but that's a trade off for other features and/or lower price.

25k is the demarcation line that separates the opportunists who want to drive a "proper" car on the cheap (like me) and the enthusiasts who see deeper value - something like a first DD/light-duty track car that they can use to learn something about driving and, more importantly, something about themselves. For these folks, 200HP is not a limitation, but a necessary safety feature.
200hp has nothing to do with safety. Its dollars and cents. No car company has ever purposely lowered hp values for the safety of the buyer or to teach them how to drive.

+1. There aren't a whole lot of other cars out there like this one. The only thing that comes close is the genesis coupe. That said, this car better handle like a 50k car because with these power figures it will have to in order to succeed and not be a 1 model wonder like the rx8 and s2000, 2 cars that handle great & also had abysmal torque figures.

The way I see it is this car is beat no matter it's price point just sheer numbers/specs and other empirical data. That is just the fact of the matter. It is lacking.

However, the real determining factor will be fun. If the car is way more fun than anything else in it's price group, it will probably sell and do just fine. So how much are you willing to pay for fun? And how much are you willing to pay for the amount of fun that this car gives you over similar cars in the price range (that may be more well equipped, have better numbers and may even be cheaper)?

I hope you are right, but I think it needs more standard equipment to justify the $25K pricing.

I can see them adding in more equipment to justify the pricing though, but my gut feeling is that they have already decided on what content is going to be included.

Think about it with pure pricing you are going to be paying the 25k price. If the BRZ is at the same price, would you not get that car instead since you can get a discount. There are Subaru dealers who still have slots left.

IIRC Toyota/Subaru were talking about a Sub 20k car when they first announced the car. I think that was what caused so much of the original buzz for the car.

Cars can be slow, relatively speaking of course, and still be extremely fun.
