Update
So the dealership had swapped my solendoids from left to right but the new code did not follow the part meaning it was something else. Toyota has told them to replace the solenoid (I dont know why since the code did not change to a p0018) but they are also replacing the VVTI gears which to me seems more like it would be the issue. They said the parts may be here tomorrow. I am not sure why they are not swapping the sensors left and right. I think it could be an issue with the sensor itself not being able to find determine the location or the cam or crank shaft. I dont know whey they dont swap the cam sensors left and right. Then again I dont know how half this stuff works. Ill update more when I get it. |

So it makes sense in my head if it is the vvti gears. Possibly they are jamming at different points for different people. That why some people have had issues with it not idling correctly while I never had that issue when the light was on. I had all the power on the top end but nothing down below.
Im curious if the guy that had the engine replaced by toyota if the vvti gears sheered and left the cams to do whatever they wanted. Once again I dont know enough about how the engine works, just thinking out loud here. I guess we will find out. In the meatime I get to drive this rental Camry that feels like a boat. I hope no one else had to pay for their rental. Toyota was saying I may have to pay but after reminding them that the vehicle is new and I was not a happy camper they got me into one. |

Update
I just got a call from the Service center. The tech there called some Toyota engineers on the east coast, they've been getting a lot of these. Word is that it works itself out over time, but I'll get more details when I go get the car in a few minutes.

Update 2
So I went in to pick up the car. They cleared the codes and drove it 50 miles, then felt confident giving it back to me. They said the CEL I saw was part of the break in, or debris getting cleared out of the engine.
The codes they pulled were P0017 - Bank one camshaft sensor position, and P1604 - Startability malfunction I drove it home, about 15 miles away, never really went above 45 -50 mph and again kept the RPM under 4000. I pulled into my driveway and the problems started again, engine shaking, RPM dips, traction and check engine lights on. Going right back to the shop tomorrow.

Yeah, learned that the hard way today. Car still won't idle properly at all, CEL on, sounds like a bag of crickets on redbull.

Ok. So we just picked up our baby from our Amazing dealership ESCONDIDO TOYOTA/SCION which is about 45 minutes away from our house, our baby drove like a dream after she had been looked after by a "Toyota Engineer" today!

What did they list as being suspect/replaced? I find it interesting that the issue seems to be a variety of things. The only one I think we've seen happen a few times are the crankshaft position sensors.

Is there any type of pattern to these? It seems like it can happen at any time. It seems the highest mileage was 5700 while the earliest was right after they bought it. I'm not filled with confidence when a car can possibly grenade itself at any time.

It appears to be a failing sensor as opposed to "grenading". Nobody's engine has blown up.

Didn't the one guys' engine blow up? Have they narrowed it down to the sensor? From what I read they're replacing anything and everything related to the issue.

I don't think anything violent has happened but he did get a ton of internals replaced. I actually hope this is what they do for mine. I'd rather remove all doubt.
