how come there arn't any "in persuit of control" documentatries on how people spend years driving the exact same car without modifying it and finding seconds upon seconds of hidden skill as they go along.

I will probably modify my FR-S to have at least the same HP as my 530 currently has... I'll be happy with that... but the 530 is going to become my project car

500 horse is pretty good until you get in the rain. I daily drove both my 500hp cobras. The rain was SCARY!!!

And you are correct. The second the twin screw went on my buddies car, he started loosing reliability. The car just sits now because it "doesn't run right all the time" and it frustrates him.

Been there and back! Glad I learned when I was young and dumb and not at the age I am now with a career and responsibilities.

There is no 'natural progression'. Everyone makes their own choices. There's nothing unnatural in skipping the 'moar pawah' phase. Banging hot-but-no-good girls is an experience that cost you time, money, nerves and opportunities to find a viable long-term partner. However, many people tend to think that whatever they did must be natural and every other way isn't .

i agree, what I said was the general consensus in the US modding scene. I've seen the Japanese modding scene, and they are less power hungry than us. I think the fact that imports here need to compete with American Muscle (ie: Import vs Muscle) is what makes the modding scene more horsepower, drag strip oriented.

The touge scene in Japan is more close to how well you control the car, and suspension set up since down hill races do not rely on power so much. That is what I grew up with reading Touge anime's and reading Japanese tuner magazines (people didn't even know what the word drifting meant).

Natural progression for the general modding scene here seems to me like:

I want a fast cool looking car -> Moar power, American Muscle, turbo's etc. Supra's falls in to this category.

Euro trash style -> Slammed/hella flush kinda seems like it started here with
VW's. Not so much with power. R32's, Golf's, Corrado's, old school beetles.

British sports enthusiasts -> older nerdier style, focus on handling and keeping OEM, Gym Kahana/Auto-X group. Smokes pipes. Triumph Spitfire, MG's, Sprites. I think the Miata crowd kinda falls in to this group for some reason.

JDM crowd -> Body kits, slammed, shares interests with Euro trash but less "clean" with JDM stickers. Power hungry as well, but more over all tuning and not just drag strips. Honda's, Subaru's, and I believe the Twins falls in to this category, inbetween the Euro Trash.

I'm sure there are people that label them selves in no strand of "style" but they've must of had something that influenced them into modding cars whether it was Forumula 1, street scenes, movies, touge etc. I think that plays a role on how we mod our cars.

At the end of the day, there will always be a car that'll be faster than yours.

i have more complaints about the brakes to stop the 200hp we have rather than the way the engine feels... (coming from a guy that used to drive a 300hp wrx on ST coilovers, yada yada yada). Most of us (including myself) have difficulty controlling all of the 200hp without computer aids yet we ask for more power. Instead of spending the money on power, I`m gonna go spend it on track days. Eventually my BRZ will get mods for more power, but as of now, with my driving skills, 200hp is still dangerous

I'm happy with the way mine came out of the box. In my youth I learned my lesson from watching my buddies continually pouring money under their hoods. The only mod I did under the hood was to remove the sound tube which I really considered stupid.

Agreed here!! I'm going to get her on the track and see what happens. Most I will do with brakes will be aggressive pads, though.

The sound tube never really bothered me until I drove up to LA last week. The stupid thing drones!!! lol! Only reason why I will probably get rid of it.

The reason why he regret it, or anybody else may, or why the market turns toward sport SUV/Sedan more than compact coupe. Because it serves no purpose....because he does not race it

1/ The majority of people who love sleek looking car, or sport car enthusiast, do not know how to work their engine, or dont want to bother.

2/ The majority of people who can afford cars is the people who has settled down, have a family

3/ The majority of sport car enthusiast do not go to the track to race their car and enjoy the car potential. Unfortunately, with legalized 70 Mph on the HighWay, you can do so in a smart car.

Therefore, it all comes down to the reality why mod your car ? Or having sport car at all.

****Mod your car for performance, you face the reliability issue, and you dont race it. Even if you do, you dont win the reward to buy a new car as in Need For Speed game, which makes it pointless

****Mod your car for cosmetic look, people laugh at you, and you cant even bring it to the track, because your car has no power......

Both modding are bad for reliability, and resell value.

****Or mod your car to go to auto show, car meet, just to show that you have balls. You ended up losing money, and gains nothing.

Modding cars only work in other countries, such as Mexico, China...etc. Their law enforcements are easy to bribe with, under ground people have huge price reward, similar to fast and furious first movie. People lives are cheap....
