Notice this image shows the "factory" headunit. If you compare the depth of the face of the head unit and its buttons/dials to the dash surround you can see that in some places it is nearly flush with the surface of the dash. Not everywhere, just on the rotary dial, and the top of the headunit near the CD slot. At the bottom of the image you see "Prototype shown with optional equipment. Production model may vary." This is in no way indicative of the stereo being non standard...

however, when you compare the above image to the silver test drive car...

You see what some people are calling a stereo cover. I say, based off of the fit and finish of the panel, combined with the comparative depth of it's surface to the dash, and the stereo's surface to the dash, that this is NOT a stereo cover (not to mention if you look at the top pic, there is no space for the "cover" to recess into). This is a filler panel, which appears production ready, for the FR-S without a stereo. It's surface is shallower in places than the Scion headunit. Now to be fair, neither vehicle has been stated to be 100% production, but, I for one believe that the headunit will be a dealer installed accessory.

EDIT: the upper picture was taken from http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2525 ). I hope they keep as much equipment out of this car as possible in effort to offer a low low price point, with the bits that people are whining about not having (leather, seat warmers, fogs, HIDs, big brakes, headunit, slurpee machines, etc) as dealer installed accessories. That's where Scion makes their $$$ anyways.
It is very common for stereo head units to be installed at the port when a car arrives in the US. Subaru does this on many Japanese built models. The GT-R IPod cables are also installed at the port when they arrive in the US. I would not over analyze the fact that the US spec FR-S tested in Japan did not have a head unit installed. There will be a version of the 86 sold in Japan that does not have a head unit, it uses this same filler panel. Expect the Scion FR-S to include the same base Pioneer head unit every other Scion product comes with. Scion does not sell one car that does not include a standard, base model head unit at the very least.

That stereo "cover" would make a good spot for a scangauge.

Technically it's a Double-DIN blank plate, not a stereo cover.

Read most of the posts in here. Alot of people do not seem to understand, BRZ and FR-S are targeting different buyers so both brands do not compete directly with each other.

FR-S: Bare bones, manual seats, manual climate and only luxury being power windows. Pure drivers car.

BRZ: heated seats, powered seats, dual auto climate control, LED driving lights, HID, premium stereo, softer suspension, softer interior materials, more sound deadening

so you have choice of either, if you want luxury go with the subaru. This way the brands differentiate the products with out cannibalizing the sales of each other. Personally, I like the scion because its a simple car. Everything I want in a weekend racer and nothing I don't need. In the world of cars getting overly complicated, FR-S is a breath of fresh air.

Some people want a mix of both though so there is going to have to be a happy median, and if that is not the case based on an "OEM" solution then using OEM parts to get there will suffice

None of the BRZ models have powered seats.

BRZ premium has what the FRS has and added in navigation and HIDS.

What some of us want in the FRS is what is in the Toyota 86 High Spec.

Nothing is set in stone yet. Scion told me complete specs and options will be announced in February. Its still possible that they will allow customers to order a Scion FRS with what is in the High-Spec 86.

To me that would be the perfect car.

For me this will be a DD anyway (I have a BMW for luxury etc..) for the past couple of months I have been hunting for a "specific" Genesis Coupe (cloth/track package and white) only 2 things I really wanted out of that car

You know the best Genesis coupe will be the upcomming 2.0 track with 280 HP. But alas that car will be more expensive than the FRS and even BRZ limited..

Yeah I have followed the Gen Coupe for awhile even the newer engine going in so I was going to assume they would do another track package.

I am content w/ waiting, I don't have a car payment now not really looking forward to one again

A GC Rspec 2.0t is 24,750. The 2013 might be 500-1000 more.
