edit: and if you've driven a Civic Si, you'd notice that it definitely does not oversteer like a boat. It even goes around the track (barely) faster than the FRS. Still has power to the wrong wheels though.
Keep in mind though, that Civic SI that was tested had the high performance pack which included upgraded wheels and tires. It finished 1/10th of a second faster than the FR-S, and the driver was pretty clear that the Prius tires were holding the FR-S back and he estimated with the same caliber or tires on the FR-S, it would have finished 2 seconds faster.

The Prius tires are simply not performance tires. They were put on the car because it makes the car fun to drive, and they help with MPG.

Oh, I know. I think the FRS is a better car... I bought one. I traded my Civic in for it. I'm just trying to say that the Civic had a really special motor.

Honda quit making exciting cars ages and ages ago, the prelude survived despite that for a time and the S2000 was the final (amazing but pricey) hurrah.

I fell the same love for the Honda brand, but they don't have anything like the 86 twins.

I think a lot of us here came from used to loving honda... Don't get why there is so much hate for them. Honda motors are definitely solid and great to listen to. I hope Honda sees the value/profit of an amazing affordable sports car like the 86 and go back to their old ways

Yep, understood. Have owned several Honda's myself and their engines are solid. And extremely reliable (can't say the same about their transmissions).

I think between Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, and Mazda, Honda will come up with something that can compete more closely to the twins. Toyota and Subaru have gotten tons of positive press, and even if they broke even on the venture, the results are lots of people going to the dealer which means interest in other cars.

If I had a chance of I would put the k20 in the frs .. it revs higher, vtec engagement is fun but the boxer engine gives the frs the right balance and makes driving excellent

Just from a boost perspective I would say the k20 is a way better engine than the FA20. A full race turbo kit will easily put you in the 400whp range on a stock block k20. Spend that money towards a kit available for the FR-S today and what do you get? No more than an additional 80-100whp!

Don't get me wrong, the FR-S/BRZ is a much more thrilling car to drive. It's just so much more fun. But to say that Honda doesn't make some good engines, that's just ignorant. If you take away everything like the fwd, the big bulky cars, the understeer, and look at just strictly engines, Honda wins. No doubt.

With that being said, I am still going to get rid of my 09 Civic Si to grab a FR-S

Honda comparison

My first Honda was a brand new 1985 Civic SI. Good car. Great engine. Then a 94 integra GSR. Good car. Great engine. Then a RSX type S. Good car. Great engine. Honda is named the Honda MOTOR company for a reason. They build some of the best engines on the planet. Their cars are have become just plain boring. They have totally abandoned the performance car segment. It's too bad because they have the talent to own the category. The way it is I wouldn't trade my BRZ for any 5 Hondas.

I drove my 95 Civic-ex 190k miles with nothing but tires, belts, and a water pump, when it sold it needed suspension bushings but other than that and another round of belts it would be good for another 200k miles.

In 4 years when this Subaru engine in my FR-S starts leaking coolant, blowing gaskets, and throwing rods I will be kicking myself for not buying a new Civic. But Honda lost their way when they gave up on their double-wishbone suspension and added 500 lbs to their cars.

People want cars that can handle and drive and the FR-S is the best drivers car to be released at this price for years, but we kid ourselves into thinking the first 7400 rpm 100hp/L N/A Subaru engine designed will be last much more than the warranty. In 6 years tops most of us will have a very nice rolling chassis, while the guy who settled for the new Civic will still have reliable (but boring) transportation.

Pick your poison.
