Brilliant!! Doing it this way the ENTIRE ENGINE noise getting into the cabin via the firewall hose point is eliminated (other than airborne).

Is anyone selling a big plug to go at the air intake pipe? Getting rid of the complete sound tube system altogether would have lowered vehicle weight, centre of gravity and cost. What were they thinking?

Is the bit of hose left at the firewall producing a sound like blowing over the top of a bottle, rising as you drive faster? You could experiment with positioning of the open end to achieve this.

Stick your fingers in your ears and see how things sound. Same principle.

I hardly noticed a difference blocking the sound tube, but it must be because the stereo is always playing at a moderate level.

Sure it is. The tube transmits sound waves thru the air from the intake into the cabin, just like your ear canal does. Block the tube, and the sound waves cannot get thru.

simple, remove a/c, stereo, carpet, passenger seat, back seats, spare tire, tools, muffler, fog lights, whatever else you don't need while driving

I wasn't sure I wanted to do this but now that I have run in the engine and can rev above 4000rpm I just thought the car was unpleasantly noisy

And as everyone has said, works well. And easily reversible.
Another from Bunnings, just fitted it (15secs) and thanks to the OP for the idea

I just used the 12vt plug and that seemed to reduce engine noise. Anyone have better luck with lowes plugs or should I just stick with the plug from the outlet?

hey guys, I just check my 10 series FRS, it doesn't have this hole in the firewall just below the stearing wheel shaft as shown on this thread. Can someone else confirm?

Me thinks you're not looking close enough. Have a look just nder the edge of the carpet there.

Might be wrong but haven't heard of them removing the sound tube on later models.
