Too bad Missouri does not have a three-day "cooling off" period like some states.

If the dealer won't make it right, contact http://ago.mo.gov/. If that still does not motivate them, small claims court. Or there's always... http://peoplescourt.warnerbros.com/ though it's never been the same since Judge Wapner left.

Best of luck.

Comments like "I'm not 30+ years old with money to blow" aren't going to get you anywhere. There's a certain amount of sarcasm that you should come to expect when on a forum, especially when a bad decision is involved. A written and signed contract supersedes any verbal agreement. You could give small claims a shot but I'm not sure how that's going to help.

On a side note, learn to use punctuation. That first post hurt my brain.

C'mon friends, let's keep some perspective. He read the stuff, trusted the professional who was guiding him through the process, and now there is a surprise. It could happen to a lot of us.

Hold up... when you say leased car and trade in in the same sentence it sounds like you're mixing things up.

If you owned the car (leased at one point or not) then you can trade it in, and you get that much off the price of the new car. If you were currently leasing it you didn't trade it in, you simply returned it at the end of the lease. In the lease scenario you didn't actually get money off the new car, you just returned the leased vehicle.

So in both cases, you get the different between the trade in value and the new car, but in the lease case the trade in value is $0 since you didn't actually own the car and didn't actually trade it in.

Look at your bill of sale and see what the amounts for new vehicle value, down payment and trade in amounts are. It doesn't matter what the dealership told you, it's the government that collects taxes. The only way the dealership can screw this up is if they put the trade in amount in as a down payment instead of a trade in.

Perhaps the salesman did not understand this distinction either.

Same thing as everyone saying "$1700 is nothing, you must be so poor". $1700 is a lot of money for anyone, even if you make $100k a year. Whether or not OP knew he had to pay or not is still definitely on him.

If someone is fortunate enough to be balling out of control and throwing away $1700, they wouldn't be wasting time on an FR-S.

That's just the thing...having $1700 shouldn't be and isn't "balling out of control" - Orbital, Burr and several other posters are all correct, especially Wparsons who made the point about the lease not having any trade in value. None of them said "you must be so poor" - they were making a statement that anybody that paid attention in a college accounting/finance or risk management course should be able to understand.

The salesmen was wrong, OP signed the paperwork and is up the creek at the moment. It's not throwing away money - it's paying taxes due. Aside from asking a friend or family member for a loan, the aforementioned credit card option is his best bet at this point.

Under contract law, applicable to goods above $500, like the other guy said, it has to be in writing. It is assumed once you sign the documents that you fully read and understood the documents, even if you did not actually read them.

As I said previously, you are stuck with the taxes.

Sounds like the dealer screwed you over but also seems like you could've avoided it all if you read your paperwork. If your dropping that amount of cash, you should definitely go over your paerwork before you sign.

it would be nice to be able to trust your salesman, so it's unfortunate that we still have to stay alert for bs when making big purchases.

1700 is a good amount of cash and it sounds like its not about being unable to afford it, but sounds like you feel cheated. what did you even plan to do with the video if you weren't even going to use it for this kind of scenario?

Not trying to be an ass but I definitely feel like any big purchases, I'm going to make sure I read the paperwork and trust that first before I sign anything.

I read all of the paperwork Atleast three times it says nothing about sales tax the DMV handles taxes that's why I asked about the taxes so I would know what I had to pay
