Everyone is an asshole from time to time. Just don't get caught red handed, cause if you do you might pay for it.

I don't even know you and I know that you've done this too to a customer, stranger, anyone. Guaranteed.

What he did was dumb. The cell phone part not the expressing his opinion part. He's entitled to that just like everyone else. Real rudeness would have been if he'd said it to his face. I just farted and wished you'd smelled it. Was that rude? No because you aren't here for me to put my butt in your face. Context is everything. He never meant for the OP to hear it so it wasn't actually him being a ****. It was him being a normal opinionated human being.
Yes, everyone does it. But that doesn't mean there aren't any consequences when you get caught.

Context is everything. If you were trying to sell me something, and insulted me (directly or indirectly), why would I feel the need to reward you with my hard-earned dollars?

OP clearly still wants the car, and the dealership clearly still wants to sell cars. The question is what the dealership is willing to give up (due to their employee's mistake) to make sure OP buys the car at the dealership and not at a competitor.

After all, the only injury you took was to your dignity. In a fair scenario you would get an apology from the salesman and the general manager.

However, once you start to negotiate a better price out of the incident you are monetizing your moral objections.

So what is your price?
They call you a jerk and it is worth $500?
Ass***e gets you $1,000 off?
Sh*thead gets you $1,500 off?

If you had any real dignity you would accept the apology, and/or walk away from the dealership.

To try to use it for personal advantage puts you on the same level as the salesman.
Respect, but I disagree.

I've been a businessman for 40+ years, and if someone makes a clanger and exposes themselves, they must pay for their stupidity. I don't see a moral issue here at all...

There's no shame in nailing an a$$hole, it's deserved. It's less about the benefit you derive, but more about teaching an idiot a lesson, and life's lessons (whether we like it or not) are mainly learnt about money issues.

You misread what I said. You teach the idiot a lesson by making him apologize in front of you and the dealer. If you want to make the lesson even stronger - you walk away from the dealership. But if you put dollars on it than you are just auctioning off your self respect.

As a businessman, think about this. You are negotiating with two vendors. You find out that one calls you a dirty "(insert ethnic/racial slur here)" behind your back but offers you a 10% discount. The other is respectful but charges more. If you accept the discount, are you teaching anybody a lesson? or are you just a loser willing to trade self-respect for money?

We differ in opinion, and that's OK. I respect yours.
You have great morality, and I think I also have that, but just in different ways...

OP, ignore all the entitled higher than holy types here, there's a few of them. I think you handled it about best you could. The salesman made a bunch of shitty remarks, and it should not be overlooked. It seems like you calmly handled everything the right way, and didn't get overly heated. Congrats on your deal and new 86!

OP is no longer buying from the salesman he was dealing with, as he stated earlier in the thread. There is no trade of self-respect for money here.

OP simply gave the dealership the option of retaining his business, if it so desired, by making up for the salesman's poor behavior. That's a perfectly reasonable response to the situation.

OP.. there are two options.

1. Be a big heart person, get the car and drive her home. Shake the guy's hands, and say thank you for his services. What will you get? You get thumbs up from us for being a professional.
2. Go there and play the voice mail. You could embarrass him, but at the same time you are putting yourself in an ugly spot. Since he could say that stuff in the office, I would say that his colleagues are not much different from him. You will be laughed again.

*3. Get some Molotov, burn that dealership down. Just don't blow up the FRS but you could blow the rest because the rest of scions are just fugly.
