I normally use Spotify, so I've tested it with a number of phones:

T-Mobile GS2 on CM10 - no volume control, only shows "BTA" on the head unit

Galaxy Nexus on stock 4.0, 4.1, or 4.2 - volume control works, will display "STREAMING AUDIO" under "BTA" when BT audio is selected

Galaxy Nexus on CM10, AOKP, SlimROM, LiquidSmooth, Paranoid Android and Bugless Beast - no volume control, only shows "BTA"

VZW GS3 on stock or modified stock ROMs, ICS and JB - volume control works, MIGHT display "STREAMING AUDIO", sometimes it doesn't but volume can still be changed

VZW GS3 on CM10 - no volume control, only shows "BTA"

Nexus 4 on stock 4.2 - volume control works, shows "STREAMING AUDIO", but the phone likes to unpair itself every time I start the car.

I've also tried a couple of these with Rhapsody and Rdio and the head unit responses are the same or similar. In fact, Rhapsody will actually show the artist and song for a split second when it starts playing, then it disappears. Google Music seems to work across the board.

So basically if you want to use any of the decent streaming music apps and want volume control, you'll have to use a stock or stock-based ROM. I don't know if this is the same case for pre-ICS phones/ROMs, though.
I'm wondering if there was been any development on this or if the AOSP/AOKP teams know about it.

I'm currently running CW10 4.1.2 AOKP on my Galaxy s2 i777. As soon as bluetooth connects, I'm allowed 5 seconds to adjust volume. My head unit only displays "BTA". I've only tried this with Double Twist but now I know its a problem with the ROM and not our head units.

Besides the FM/Bluetooth switch for volume control, what I've been doing is setting my bluetooth volume to half on my phone then adjusting it on the head unit to something manageable. I place my phone in the little cubby by the aux and usb slot and adjust volume through my phone.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2081475 Looks like the fine folks at XDA have got a "patched" APK for spotify that should allow the head unit to control via bluetooth. I have tried it on two phones (HTC One X+ on stock software and an HTC Incredible on CM7.2), but neither seem to do anything different than the stock APK in the FRS (no volume control, no metadata). Has anyone else tried this patched app with the stock FRS headunit ?

I haven't been able to try it out but doesn't Spotify only place through their radio and not the actual songs on my sd? I'm looking for a MOD or patch on a player that would allow this. I'm going to search XDA and see if anyone has address the problem. There has to be at least one developer who has an FRS/BRZ.

Just putting in my .02...

I recently got an FR-S. My SGS3 on CM10.0 (android 4.1) could stream with Pandora over bluetooth, but the volume control didn't work on the stock radio.

So I decided to upgrade to CM10.1 (android 4.2), and now the volume control works! For those of you running old ROMs, perhaps an upgrade could fix it? Upgrading from 4.1->4.2 is a major PITA though. Make sure to flash an upgraded custom recovery beforehand to avoid issues.

I'll be trying this later in the week when I have time. Hopefully it works. Thank you!

The EQ settings on PowerAmp are really, really good. Plus you can set different defaults to headphone jacks and bluetooth pairing which really saves a lot of hassle, and the controls on the radio work flawlessly with it when using bluetooth. My only gripe is the text doesn't show up.
