I think a lot of those swaps make sense.

People want more power and don't want to spend a lot of money, so you go with what's available.

SR instead of a rotary? I like the rotary, but how many do you have to replace before it gets old? Especially if you're adding boost to an RX-8 since rotaries and boost traditionally can have issues.

V8 into everything seems to be a US/Australian thing because there's a large supply of hugely powerful, reliable and inexpensive V8's. If you choose an Aluminum block, you pay very little/no weight penalty. I think aluminum small-block V8's weight within 50 pounds of the iron block I4 in a Miata so it doesn't even ruin the weight balance.

I don't get most of the K20 swaps just because of the cost of entry with that motor (unless they're falling in price).

There's also usually a ready and cheap supply of most Japanese engines. I know I bought a JDM engine and 6-speed transmission for my Miata for $1500 in great condition. It would have cost me more than that for a ~100k mile junkyard engine alone from US salvage yards.

Personally seen a Miata with LS swap, perfectly done, with 50/50 weight distribution, doing laps at Mosport GP. You couldn't tell it apart from a regular NA miata on the street... aside from the 18's.

alos,

not so much a swap, but this is the most ridiculous thing on wheels that i know off.

Honda B18 + Corvette Z06

Sadly, the picture was just a joke, done by a mechanic with a bit of spare time, an engineless Z06, and a side project involving a shiny Honda engine. Being normally a transverse engine, the longitudinal/rear-drive fitting in the Corvette would have made for some exciting transmission-adaptation work if it was real.
