I will try to remember to look at a bottle when I get home.
Just got a case of this (6 quarts) for $47 shipped; cheaper than AutoZone for those of you who want to buy it.

On, and on my bottles, it says API SL, SJ/CF

Here are the breakdowns of the API classes for those who are interested:

According to the oil nuts over at "Bob is the Oil Guy", they don't seem to mind at all that this oil uses older certifications, and from what I have read, the API specs aren't that big of a deal, and are more for emissions standards than anything, and have nothing to do with engine performance and longevity.

Mine show the same label locally (Autozone).

I have no doubt it is a great oil (only thing I wanted to run in my old VQ37 motor b/c of the HTHS rating), but I'm concerned about warranty. If we get the dreaded CEL and they ask us to prove we used oil IAW the manual specifications, I wonder if it'd be an issue...

My local stuff (autozone) is the "european formula" SPT black bottle, labeled "API SL, SJ/CF". I wonder if we can confirm somehow that this bottle is the same as the 0w-30 in the gold bottle?

I'm not sure that it is, because the section on the bottle that says things like this:

Looks different on my black bottle, which says:
- ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4
- API Service SL, SJ/CF
- VW 502 00/ 505 00
- BMW Longlife-01
- MB-Approval 229.1/ 229.3/ 229.5

What is the CEL issue, and how is it tied to the type of oil or API rating of the oil?

They would have to prove that the fact that a SL or SJ API rating of your oil, rather than the recommended SN, caused the CEL, which is absolutely ridiculous, and I don't think they could say that with a straight face.

I'm talking about the infamous engine problem from last year. All sorts cam timing errors, internal engine problems, and ECU problems. I would absolutely think they'd have a straight face with a simple statement, "improper engine oil" in that example.

Check the nsanely huge and most-read thread in the technical section...

I'm on Motul 300V 0W 40.

(less viscous than 5W 30 at cold temperatures and more viscous at high temperatures - e.g. no oil cooler).

They would still have to prove that it's the API rating that you are using which has caused engine issues, because the GC 0w30 meets all other specifications. There is a ton of case law on the denying of warranties, and puts the burden of proof on the manufacturer. I do not think that would fly.
