Well I did the install of the ARK midpipe. I'm kinda... dumbfounded? I dunno if that's the word I'm looking for. I just cannot place where the drone has been relocated to. Drone has been reduced at certain rpms and happens at others. I just haven't figured it out yet. I can hear more of the burble of the boxer style engine/uel stock header. The exhaust note is maybe a little louder than stock, but more appealing to me. I can cruise at higher speed with less drone... sometimes. I dunno. Let me get some mileage with the new pipe and build up a little carbon inside. It's been a long week with very little sleep.

Anyways, a note on the ARK midpipe. Do not forget that you have to cut the under panel to clear the Helmholtz tube. It might not appeal to those who do not like cutting stuff. I did a quick job on it with a dremel and will touch it up in a few days. I'll seal the edge to prevent any de-lamination of the fiberglass.

Here are some quick iPhone pics of the under panel interference and then the cut for clearance...

Yeah you might have to break it in before the drone settles to a new RPM. With the ARK test pipe with Helmholtz, does it make the Invidia N1 louder or quieter?

Depends, at some rpms it's quieter, while at others it's meaner. If you can get a high flow cat welded on it might just be the ticket. Right now something is hitting under the car at wot when I shift hard/fast. I'm gonna re-align the cat back tonight and check things out. Back to your question, it does make it somewhat louder, but definitely not loud like putting on a header loud. Hard to tell right now because I'm relearning to shift/cruise in my car again with the shift in drone. Plus I was stuck behind a slow arse car on the way to work. 5mph at every turn and stop sign. Yeah, I was an impatient child that morning. Hee hee

Awesome, thanks for the reply! I might have to look into a high flow cat and a Helmholtz resonator. I'm just trying not to spend too much. If I can't get the Invidia N1 and get rid of the drone for under $1,000 I'm probably just going to get the Ptuning or LeChute. Those are the three that I personally think sound the best.

Hmmmm, I was just under the car straightening out the cat back. Go to this link about a new turbo kit and scroll down to where you see under the car. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31218 From there, look and you can see where they cut the black under tray that bolts up to the underside of the transmission mount. It is similar to this cut. It has to be done to clear the resonance chamber. If you look in my pics, the front of the car is to the right. Just use my pics in conjuction with the turbo kit pics from that thread. If I have time tomorrow, big if, I'll try and take some pics. I'm trying to find another pic online that shows it uncut so that you can compare...

I was just thinking about this because the other night, I was cruising around and downshifted. I ended up at 4000rpms in 5th gear, no drone at all. All I heard was the engine reving. That's the only sound I heard as I cruised down the highway in 5th at 4000rpms. I did the same in 3rd gear today. I only heard the sound of the engine reving at 4000rpms. No drone. None of that.. bwwwaaaaahhhhhhhh. I'm starting to think that my drone is just before 3000rpms. I dunno, I'm still trying to figure this thing out.

I'm in the same boat as you guys are with N1's. I was really thinking of adding an inline resonator with my Berk HighFlow Cat front pipe this made me think twice. If I can only figure out the right placement for this.

My understanding is that resonators don't cut out sound, especially the Helmholtz-style ones that remove a cat in the process.... Cats are effectively a muffler, so removing that (in any situation) increases volume. Dont buy a resonator in hopes that it will quiet down. I had the ark grip cat back and bought the ark front pipe. It increased in volume, which I was expecting.
