No, it sounds better without it if you have the TRD exhaust.

I've been driving for a week now with my TRD intake and exhaust and I have to say, the car definitely is noticeably faster and picks up revs more quickly.

Also, I'm glad the noise generator is gone. Good riddance.

This confirms that the intake shows an improvement with stock tune and an exhaust. Still more meaningful than nothing and can't be completely dismissed. Most of us are already running some form of aftermarket exhaust anyway. Like others said, gains don't stack. You're likely to see more gains on your first mod than the second. The intake being Thorpedo's 2nd mod makes it even more a testament to the TRD CAI.

Even with stock tune as baseline, there are still flaws. What about manufacturing variations causing baseline variations between stock motors? By your argument, that difference can mean the TRD CAI responds differently between stock motors so ANY dyno other than your own is invalid. Say we do dyno on your motor. We can further argue that you need to dyno after your ECU has learned with a few hundred miles on your stock intake vs. a few hundred miles on the TRD CAI to get the most practical, meaningful results. But what about ambient environment changes between the two runs? Point is, any test can be invalidated if you look for reasons.

Though @Thorpedo's test may not seem ideal in your eyes, it's the best standard we have til we see other results which can still be proven "invalid," just tested differently. Then we can look at all results collectively and draw meaning from that. And so far, the 2 dynos on this thread plus everybody's personal experiences being consistent with said results are already meaningful indicators.

This graph does have the AF on it at the bottom for the FR-S that dynoed saturday with the TRD intake. I will link mine print out when I get home to show you the AF differences.

Below is a Visconti E85 vs stock dyno from late august. Notice the AF ratio....

These dynos indicate the trd intake is running leaner than the stock car. The trd one holds the 13 a/f ratio for most of the run while the stock one never gets close and dives off sooner.

Finally installed mine today. Everything went on fine and it seems like the freaking car was designed with this intake in mind.

Like a dumb@ss I broke one of the mounts on the original intake trying to get the grommet off before I noticed that you could just push out the metal ring. Felt like slapping myself.

Anyone notice that the instruction book care section says to use the K&N filter cleaning kit for maintenance? They even give you the part numbers. Makes me think the filter is from K&N.

Well after debating on getting this intake, I bit the bullet and got it for under $400 off EBay from a dealership. I just installed the intake. Afterwards, I let the car idle for 10 minutes without ever touching the gas pedal. On my first drive my initial thought was the throttle response was much better. Feels like it had more pep when you stepped on it. Felt great actually. I'll give it the test tomorrow to and from work. But overall I like it. Nice OEM look and everything fits great. Easy and fast install.

Prior to this I was running the HKS drop in filter. Car didn't feel like this when I did that install back in October. I'm also running Stage 1 pump gas Visconti tune and the Invidia N1 cat back. Tomorrow I'll be tossing on a front pipe and hopefully I'll be installing a header/overpipe by the end of the month.

Do I recommend this setup? I just got it, hard to say. I'll have to get a few hundred miles on it to see how the computer adapts to the new intake. So far it's promising. We'll see. I'll post up later after I do my work commute.

JImmyMac how you like the Visconti tune, did it make a noticeable increase in power?

I am interested in getting a tune but have never done anything like that before and am a little afraid of doing it. It I got one it would be a stage 1 pump gas (93 octane) tune as well as I dont plan on using e85 or doing forced induction).

A tune will go a long way if you get performance parts like exhaust and intake. You can feel the performance increase with the butt dyno, but don't expect the magic of a turbo. Every little bit helps. Especially with our dreaded torque dip. Think of the tune as the glue to a puzzle. It holds it all together. I'd naturally buy it again if I had to do it all over again.
