New manual car or not isn't really the problem. Some people drive manual for life, but they still screw up. It depends on how you drive, just be aware of environment surrounding you. Manual just has one more pedal and a little more effort. I think a used manual FR-S or tC would be great choices for people who want manual transmission car, but don't want an old car.
To be honest, I crashed twice in my automatic car (Camry 95), but never in a manual (Civic 95, Camry 90).

That is just me. I would never advice anyone to buy a brand new manual sports car to learn. Just behaves differently. If anything learn on a friends manual (might not have any who drive a stick) or just buy a junker with a manual for $500 and drive it until you are comfortable and sell it again with little to no money lost in the process. Why get a brand new car and struggle to learn driving on it? I would rather struggle on some POS car, get comfortable and then move onto the FRS. In addition RWD will handle differently than the OP's Passat.

Yes they are. MT>>>AT. MT is more fun, provides more control, is cheaper and the right choice for this car. However to excel at driving a MT properly takes time and practice.

^This. I would definitely recommend getting a beater FWD manual to learn. I know so many friends in the past that went from FWD autos to RWD manuals like the S2K and of course they crashed. One of them crashed on the first day they got the car! But no matter what OP decides to do, as long as he's careful and respects the machine, things should be OK.

Well that's what I meant. I want to buy a used one but if the demand is very high ,the used prices will be high.

In 2 or 3 years there will definitely be good deals out there. I got my 2002 WRX with 40k miles on it in 2007 for $10,000 cash when I was 19. I think the BRZ used car pricing will be very similar to the WRX in that it will be higher than most cars, but you can always find deals if you look long enough. I think in 2-3 years the price will be around 14k for a used one, so your 12k will get you most of the way there. It is the way to go because you won't have any payments to make for the next 5 years or however long you want to keep it and you know it will last that long. In the mean time I've gotten a job and all that and now I can start looking at the BRZ/FRS since the WRX has been so cheap to run all these years.

As far as learning manual on it, not a big deal at all. My WRX was my first manual car and it now has 130,000 miles on its original clutch. As long as you aren't abusive you won't have any problems.

Nah, no worry. Traction control on Toyota is really good.
Like I said, I don't recommend a new car to him either since he's a teenager. Used one is probably better choice for him. I have driven a few new MT cars, they are easy to drive than the older ones ( or maybe I drove a POS car). I wouldn't recommend an old car to him because it could be a nightmare (I mean seriously ).

Excuse guys, but what is "OP"? I'm really confused because I just registered last week. Lol. Since you guys recommend a beater MT car, can you give me suggestions?

Do you live in a snow area? If so, get a FWD car like Civic, Integra, or any Subie with stick shift.
If you don't live in a snow area, get a RWD car old Miata, or old MR2. Those are just what I recommend, there might be some other good cars i'm not aware of.

OP = original poster.

Thanks for the info.
I'm asking this because Seattle sometimes doesn't snow in the Winter. Last year, it snowed like 3 days and melted just at the fourth day. LOL

while your reasons are right you are omitting the fact that there is often a case where at is faster than mt....

Well I was on Autotrader, and I found a 1987 supra that's in good condition but just has a blown head gasket. It's 1000 bucks. I'll probably get this for a starter while continuously saving for the "beatiful" Scion FR-S. Any thoughts? Here's the link http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e&rdpage=thumb

I've driven a manual before and I know how to, not perfect, but I have some experience. I'm still getting the car wether anyone tells me or not lol I've been waiting far too long. Besides, it'll be a bonding tool for my dad and I

Notice how I never said anything regarding MT being a faster transmission? This car is meant to be cheap, fun to drive and a car in which the driver is in control. MT is the correct answer. No need to dwell on this as we have an old thread just for that.
