You should at least let her know there is an AT version available. Mine is an AT, and aside from the usual MT/AT discussion, I'm enjoying the car along with the rest of its features and looks. Maybe you'll get another chance at talking with her.

I think you can drive stick after a few weekends of parking lot practice. But I mean, a year to be able to start on a steep hill with complete confidence. Another year to be able to appreciate the balance of the car to while seamlessly matching gears and drifting into a corner. I don't know if I can believe you are fully exploiting the car on a few months

Yeah that's kind of ignorant to tell her she needs to learn to drive a stick before she can buy the car. 1. There's the auto 2. Its that kind if elitist attitude that turns new enthusiasts away.

Cool story though.

It's not elitist because I would apply same advice to myself. And not ignorant, because it's based on premises we can agree on, such that fr-s is a rwd sports car which is primarily meant to be enjoyed at the limits of traction, to which it is the easier to take than a basic civic. I don't think it is wise use of resources and probably even dangerous for most people. People who don't drive stick looking to get an FR-S most likely want it based on superficial impressions from 2fast2furious and commercials, or reviews, not first hand experience or reality.

That comes across as pretty elitist to me.

You're basically saying that if you don't have the driving background, you can't handle it.

It is absolutely snobbish, if not also elitist. Just to be clear, I'm talking about your attitude/preachiness. If all RWD sports cars had to be driven manual, explain to me how so many performance cars are sold as AT only?

I won't even go into the reasoning that it's "meant to be enjoyed at the limits of traction" and your implicit statement that you must do so in a MT. How would you like someone else telling you how you're supposed to drive your car?

By all accounts of reviews of the AT FR-S/BRZ, the slushbox is remarkably good. Just because you yourself wouldn't be caught dead driving an auto, doesn't mean someone else (especially someone who is interested in the car, albeit for reasons unknown) can't do so. Because anyone can take this car through twisties and enjoy the shit out of it, stick or not. Get off your high horse, please.

Are the insurance companies elitist for charging more for this car compared to a civic?

Should I add a * after each sentence?

* This is my personal opinion based on my subjective preferences. I am sharing my personal opinion because I am saying this sentence. It does not mean that I hereby declare this to be only one and true acceptable opinion in the universe. I am not telling to think the same way I do.

Your opinions on this forum and anywhere else on the internet are completely of your own discretion. But you state your opinion as fact when you say things like:

If you noticed that she was bummed by that, which you clearly did, you could very well have told her that a less advisable option would be to drive the AT version. In fact, I'm pretty sure I read in a sales thread somewhere on this forum that around half of all FR-S's sold are AT...

I was cleaning my wheels one evening last week, and some kid in a blacked-out STi rolls past, and gives me two thumbs up. Felt good, for sure.

I did say 'should', despite what I wrote in my post. But yes, I could have recommended AT, and maybe she was bummed out because I am a **** for not saying that, but I do have an opinion that she wouldn't utilize the cars fun factor (drifting into corner) and so instead I would recommend Genesis Coup which is more fun in straight line. With more time I could explain my reasoning, but in a split second, I will always say, because I think so, you should know stick well to get the most out of FR-S.

I don't plan on exploiting the car. I just want to enjoy it for what it's heritage brings as well as the styling of this car. I don't need to do all of that because it brings me no benefit to push the car to it's limit. I tend to not lean towards people's opinion towards popular belief and just do my own thing.

That being said, let's jump to the "mechanics" Matching gears and knowing the balance of the car isn't that hard. Anyway, to drive is one thing, to master the car is another -- I'm really not into the mechanics that much. Just want to enjoy what I purchased with my hard earned cash =) That being said, I do push the car's potential to where I want, not where other people wants me to push the car's potential to.
Thanks for the reply -- appreciate your opinion in this!

Maybe where you are, but amazingly my FR-S is cheaper then my Civic was to insure. It's even cheaper then my Acura.

I'm not going to debate this any further though, its a lose-lose discussion.

I get a lot of "Batmobile" and "Bruce Wayne" comments. I don't mind it.
