People have been running low boost setups with superchargers or small-ish turbos on integras, preludes, NSX's, 350z's, Celica GT-S's/Lotus Elise/Exige's, stock honda k20 motors, BMW's, Mini Cooper S's, NC Miata's reliably for quite some time. I dunno what to tell you.(Some of those are even stock, with factory warranties!)

If you stay reasonable about your goals and don't cheap out, it isn't a problem.

Not to mention motorcycles. Though they tend to have a different standard of reliability than car owners.

a lower margin for error it means environmental factors actually play a significant role in reliability.. It means you better have a weatherchannel app on your phone and make sure ambient temps don't reach xxx while you're driving or else you're jeopardizing your car.

I live in South Texas, and have never known anybody who didn't cheap out on setup or tuning and stayed reasonable to have a problem.

is a 12.5 compression 4 cylinder turbo/supercharger possible? Sure......Is it smart? Lol not really. That's like saying leaving one in the chamber ****ed and loaded at the Christmas party is a good idea.

Well I certainly wouldn't order the first generation of aftermarket turbo kits, that's for sure. I'm just saying it can be done. But like anything else, you gotta pay to play. Fast/cheap/reliable-choose two, insert platitude of your choice <here>.

The quality of aftermarket tuners varies tremendously. There are lots of great ones out there. There are lots of not-so-great ones out there, too. Sometimes they're one and the same, depending on platform!

OEM tunes may tend to leave a lot of power on the table, but they probably aren't going to break your engine.

Supercharging is likely... but I'm interested in opinions on if it will be a bolt-on kit or if people think Toyota will only release it as complete model. If it is a TRD kit, does that mean you keep the warranty if you have it dealer fitted to your car? Can it be fitted without reworking the engine internals?

Toyota is already hard at work evaluating a high performance version of the new Toyota GT 86 sporting coupe. Chief engineer Tetsuo Tada says that not only is a supercharged GT 86 envisaged, test cars have already been made and are being evaluated by Toyota Racing Developments, the Japanese giant’s in house tuning division.

Tada-san favours the supercharger approach because it is simpler to achieve than increasing engine size and doesn’t wreck throttle response as turbocharging might. Indeed Toyota says that turbocharging along with four-wheel drive and wide tyres are what make sports cars boring to drive.

Supercharging is also a key competence for TRD which has been offering this kind of forced induction as an aftermarket kit for Toyotas since 1998.

TRD’s most popular supercharger conversion is applied to the American market Tacoma pick up, boosting its 4-litre V6 engine from 233bhp to 301bhp suggesting that a 280bhp GT 86 with, critically, a massive boost in the low down torque the car currently lacks would be easily achieved.

It is not yet known whether, if approved, the supercharged GT 86 would be offered as an aftermarket pack or as a model in its own right.

Post was already way to long, but this is of interest, from Wiki in regards to the Tacoma TRD supercharger.

Oh please let them release it as a kit and covered by warranty, it'd keep the early adopters happy plus bring in the business for the dealerships.

Toyota Racing Development offers a TRD supercharger for the FJ Cruiser and Tacoma equipped with 4.0-liter V6 engine, available through Toyota dealerships. The supercharger increases the Tacoma's power output to 304 hp (227 kW) from the original 236, and the torque output to 334 lb·ft (453 N·m).[10]

This all-new TRD supercharger is compatible on all 2005 through 2009 model year Toyota Tacoma trucks, and 2007 and 2009 model year FJ Cruiser SUV. This supercharger system features Eaton roots-type rotating components in a one-piece integral manifold, iridium spark plugs, and a five-rib serpentine drive belt system. It produces six to eight pounds of boost pressure per square inch.

The supercharger, when installed by an authorized Scion or Toyota dealer, has the same warranty as powertrain, five years or 60,000 miles (97,000 km), or the balance of the new car warranty, whichever is greater. When not installed by an authorized dealer, the supercharger is covered by a 12-month, 12,000-mile (19,000 km) parts-only warranty. The manufacturer's suggested retail price of the TRD supercharger is $4,500, not including installation.

My understanding is yes and no... they use alpine and Magnuson. All up tho the article is interesting, talks about limitations put on the kit by toyota... apparantley they wont allow the inclusion of larger injectors with the kit because that would require EPA re-approval etc.

fwiw TRD Tundra SC kit comes with injectors, fuel pump, and plugs.

If they do make a TRD supercharger. It will be a bolt on and you will have to get install at a dealership to keep the warranty. TRD is Toyota's aftermarket company. All the TRD parts will be add-ons unless they want to take a different marketing route.

Whine comes from the type of charger used. If its a centrifugal (looks like a turbo, but belt driven) then I don't see how you will get this whine. But if it's a twin screw or roots(unlikely) then
