what meth kit are you using
what meth kits are you guys using and how do you have it setup. looking to get a kit installed in my car after the motor gets rebuilt. Is there a way to have it controlled by the ecu. Say you run low on meth/water can ecutek lower the boost and adjust timing and shut off the meth injection?

I started looking yesterday for a kit. I remember of a customer of mine in the vdub scene that was running a SnowPerformance stage 2 kit. I have to read more on the subject before i take any descision

ya i looked at the SnowPerformance as well as the AEM one. im more curious if you can wire it into the ecu for failsafe. That way when tank runs low it will auto shut off and switch to a non meth tuned map.

Water injection (and the silly half-way house, meth/water injection), is for cars which have inadequate charge cooling.
Your engine, I assume, is being built to a reasonable static CR with an adequate intercooler, so there's no need for it. It's just another point of failure, complexity, and more to calibrate with the tune. If your charge air is staying under 40C, then there's no problem. Why displace cylinder volume with water and methanol, when petrol has a much higher calorific value? |

Thats only a small part of the benefits to water/meth and certainly not the main benefit but more so icing on the cake. Complex? I guess...... but mostly disagree. There's really nothing complex about it. If you have ever used water/meth you would know its probably the next best thing to e85 for detonation supression regardless of what the static compression is. Hes going to replace static compression with turbo compression so the cylinder pressures will still remain (whole other discussion) just in another form. I am the last to turn away water/meth as an option because it is very good at what it does and best of all cheap so long as the correct safety margins are taken. Running on the ragged edge of timing with meth should be avoided though. This is a good segway to the OPs question of can it be tide into EcuTek tuning to create a failsafe? The short answer.... yes. Insert tuner, for preference in how they do it depending on which meth kit controller is being used.

Water injection shouldn't be viewed as an anti-detonant though. It was originally developed (for cars) by works race teams where charge cooling wasn't very effective (think rally cars going sideways with minimal air flow through the intercooler). It enabled higher MEP's coming out of bends/slides to give them an advantage over the competition. Heavily retarded engines due to high ACT's was not good!
I remember a forum thread many years ago where Aquamist called upon a friend of mine (ex-lead wrc engineer) to back up their statements (similar statements to yours), and he re-educated them and they've since changed their tune! (Although I wouldn't be surprised if they've now gone back to the old marketing ploy......) It's an argument i'm not going to win on the internet though, there's far too much misinformation out there, and lots of nerds who want to do armchair engineering who write pages and pages on the subject (not suggesting you are one of these, of course). Bottom line is, if you engineer the package correctly, for the right fuel, you don't need band-aids like this. |
