With the type of handling this car seems designed to deliver, the power delivery of a turbo is completely unduited to its character. Turbo's coming on boost DO upset the balance of the vehicle, and with a light rwd platform, having the turbo spool and boost mid-corner WOULD make MOST OF YOU loose control and Crash at some point, you will be over estimating your driving skill!
A Supercharger though, would allow more power/speed and retain the progressive power dilivery. And to everyone who is going to go on about variable geometry or twin scroll...... These are still not as linear as Superchargers, and DO upset the balance as they spool. |

For all the NA fans that would like to keep the FA20 and improve it, it would be nice to get in contact with some of the companies that work on NA engine tuning. To improve power, it is not only about displacement. There are many other factors that could improve the engines power up to 45 PS keeping the same displacement: camshafts, forged pistons, lightweight flywheel, intake, exhaust,....

NA for me. Honestly after I drove a friends modded Lotus Elise and heard the engine roar I fell in love! Especially the response it gave back as soon as I stepped on the pedal. drooool. NA to me just has a better pedal feel and its so much cooler imo to have a nice NA engine that kicks butt.

Where are the engine bay photos? I'm curious to see where we're gonna stuff the turbo... and then the question is, what do we do about engine management.

I'm not sure how much lighter I'd like to go if it's going to be a daily driver:
"The six-speed manual transmission has a high-effort, short-throw shifter and a light clutch, and it’s a bit easy to stall the BRZ off the line because its flywheel weighs only 20 lb, some 9 less than an STI’s." For what it's worth, I voted NA too. I know it's been said many times on the forum, but I'd rather work on my driving skill and maybe add some handling mods before I do anything to increase power. |

I'm used to a boosted car. Considering this car is replacing my built S14, I would've loved for it to have come boosted from the factory. But I'm happy it didn't cause then god knows what the price would start at for a base model.
That being said, I'd still love to see a turbocharged one but I'll wait to make assumptions until after I see some N/A builds. I find it funny how people say they can only get like 20-30hp on modding an N/A engine of this size when I see 4ag's from the old 86s making well over 200hp fully built(120ish stock)...Granted, they're extensive builds but it's nearly 100hp extra. I think 250 would be a sweet spot for the car with a bit of weight taken off the car.

the ony part that bothers me about this car is the lack of torque.
I would love 200lb/tq. usually that would require FI but I'll see how this engine responds to basic mods like full exhaust intake and a nice tune should give me something around 175 lb/tq which would make me happier. |

Call me slow, but I'm saying NA. Less parts that can go wrong, and it'll be safe and hopefully reliable from the factory. I'm going to leave the turbocharging to my track car.. aka RB20 powered S13 hatch.

Its a close call honestly...
With these high compression engines the boost will be limited as many of you know. 5psi would be just fine I think as long as the intercooler is super effecient, and you are running 93 octane. The fuel maps will be a PITA but eh up to you guys. The thing about having an engine with such high compression only allowing low boost applications, your equipment needs to be top notch. There can not be much variability at all. $5000 would most likely be how much money you would need to spend. Since turbo's do spool at low rpms (2500+) your normal injectors will have to most likely be replaced. The DI from the D4S should be enough, but like i said tuning is gonna be a PITA. Unless you can buy used parts that you are 110% sure wont weaken then all the power to you. Now $5000 for an NA build is a lot of power compared to 5psi of boost...even at 12:5:1 ratio (which makes more power per psi as compared to a low comp setup where you can squeeze in more psi and fuel for more power...you get the picture I hope at this point lol) The great part about NA is that other than the fuel tune, everything can be custom (aka cheap..) Just find a really good machine shop/exhaust shop/etc I know we dont have the same engines as the 370z but just changing the cats on the exhaust system free's up 15 whp...add an intake and you get 20whp total free'd up. Which is nuts... So assuming that this engine is super regulated...delete secondary cat (if there is one) get a high flow cat, well you get the picture. Custom made parts are cheaper than mass produced parts exhaust wise..soo lets break it down. Headers (might have to buy mass produced reputable headers on this one) 200-800 dollars Header back exhaust including highflow cat, 1k (if titanium) Intake, 100-300 depending on custom or manufactured PnP $1000 (if even needed...) Cams $600-1200 depending Well you guys get the picture...essentially without changing the internals I feel as if N/A is actually the best bang for your buck. Sorry for the long post, but some people are not realizing that our internals are making the F/I vs. NA an easier choice. Now if your budget is 10k...Boost will outpower NA for sure. Btw, on a track, two identical cars, with the same amount of power, one being F/I (turbo) and one being NA, the NA will be faster...something to think about. |
