We will have two different single element designs to offer, one swan neck and the other normal. The one on this page is the normal mount and will be cheaper. The swan neck is a more aggressive airfoil profile which will be for a select few people who want to maximize downforce on a single element wing.

There is a valid engineering reasoning behind swan neck (J mounting). Swan necks are mounted to the top of the profile to keep the air less disrupted on the underside of the profile (low pressure side). The low pressure side is where most of the real work is being done. This is the most efficient design available beside the endplates being the mounts. However if the endplates are also the mounts (like modern F1 cars), the wing span is limited.

Oh and looks are subjective. My designs are almost all based on data and not looks.

Excellent work here guys. I'm so appreciative of real engineers developing fantastic products.

One big "con" to consider for the tow-hook mounted wing would be a disqualification of some sort from some racing bodies where the wing cannot extend X amount of inches from the farthest point in the car. I don't run NASA or SCCA but I have several friends who battle with eligibility and struggle to stay in certain brackets. Anyway, it's a small issue in the whole scheme of things.

Nice work.

Paul's still working on the CFD and I'll make sure he posts the data once it's complete. It takes a lot of processing (~4 hours on our workstation, ~24 hours on Paul's PC). However, we will offer a tow hook mount and this is a rendering of what it will roughly look like (the final upright shape will change to place the wing where it needs to be):

While this solution is not ideal, there are some real benefits.

Pros:
The wing is mounted to a structural part of the chassis to better transmit the load
The load is transmitted at the rear most point of the car for better leverage
You get a multi-purpose tow hook (we plan on making a few additional options in the future)
NOTHING is drilled or cut, EVERYTHING can fully be put back to stock

Cons:
The tow hook is loaded in bending and in shear
You need to buy two tow hooks and larger uprights so,
It is heavier
It is more expensive.

If you can deal with the additional cost and additional weight this may be the perfect compromise for having a fully functioning wing at the track and removing it for daily driving.

Picture of said STI for reference

Thoughts and opinions welcome. Remember, we won't really get to start development until late summer-early fall so please stay patient with us.
I would totally buy this

Nice work.
The standard upright will be based on CFD. We can make custom uprights that place the trailing edge to place the wing where it needs to be. We will also have a standard trunk mount. Just offering more solutions tailored to the customer's preference. :]

Don't mind Paul, he's very passionate about getting results. I on the other hand, try to make sure the results look good, and will ask for compromises some times, but as he said it's subjective. When it comes to aero, Paul's the boss. We are a group of engineers, with each having their own specialty, and they are largely left to do their own development.

"quillars", aka swan neck pylons:
http://www.mulsannescorner.com/AcuraARX-02-4.html

Stylists generally doesn't like them, trust me...

So much work to design something so simple lol. "Quillars" is new to me. However, depending on who you're talking with and what part of the world he or she is from, I've heard it called: upright, pylon, stand, post, pillar but all these words are interchangeable.

Depends on the racing series too. We (Riley Tech) generally refer to them as "pylons", because we already have "uprights" in the suspension. Mentioned "wishbones" while at a nascar cup team, and some guys looked at me funny, luckily our boss was a former open wheeler

I don't mind lol. Very true. When I interviewed with Cranfield in the UK it was the first time I heard the word pylon used and I was just completely lost at what was being asked. The question was, "How would you design a wing pylon?"

We were trying to get SRT to let us go with swan neck pylons for the Viper GT car, they refered to them as "goose neck" and styling didn't like the look. I tried using the term "swan neck" hoping the more elegant swan would sell the idea...still traditional pylons

Some friends at Rollcentre Racing in the UK built this 86, and went with swan neck pylons.

We are not going to offer a license plate mounted solution (please see post 35), but rather a tow hook mounted solution so there's no drilling involved and it can be fully removed when you don't want to use the wing.
