Same thing happened to mine. I took it to a local Subaru dealer to get it fixed under warranty, but even after they swapped out the mounting plate (they told me original one was stripped), the mirror was still very wobbly and unstable. I ended up buying an extra mounting plate from the parts department and installed it myself.

Yep, this happened to one of my clients mirror after they had a windshield replaced.
He came in and explained what happened. After I talked to some techs and parts I found this adapter kit.

The adapter kit is pretty cheap. I installed it for my them and you only want to "snug" the screws. Don't try to torque them or over-tighten. You can always go back and tighten but once it's stripped you gotta get a new adapter.

Would an aftermarket GenTex have this issue? I have one I custom installed in my Jeep and it's been there for years without a problem.

The GenTex mirrors look the exact same as our OEM mirrors. But I can't say what mounting hardware they use.

i've noticed that my mirror has a certain shake to it when driving on the freeway or bad roads. there's no noise, but there's enough movement that the view is distorted a bit when you compare to the steadiness of the side mirrors.

i'm concerned my mirror may fall off as well, or is slight unsteadiness normal?

Mine does the same exact thing. There seems to be some play on the section that mounts directly to the window. If you twist the actual mirror very slightly and look at the section that is on the glass you will see that it moves alittle. Not sure how to fix it.

Wait...isn't it under warranty? the warranty should cover crap like this, I'd take it to the dealer ASAP and have them fix it for Free. Its a Brand new car! The consumer shouldn't have to pay to fix Manufacturer Defects.

Mine fell off about a half a mile from the dealer after picking it up from some warranty work. Turned right around and went back. The tech said it was the mounting plate as well. Before it fell off it was shaking so badly I couldn't use it without feeling nauseous. It fell off in my hand as I was trying to adjust the mirror.

Definitely a warranty issue but I have a funny feeling it has the potential to come back since they replaced it with the same type of mounting plate. Maybe if there are enough issues it'll warrant a TSB? Doesn't seem safe to me if your rear view mirror falls off while you're driving. I found it pretty difficult to steer, shift, and hold the swinging mirror all at the same time.

Mine fell off today because of a stripped out mounting plate. For $10 I will replace it myself rather than trying to have the dealer warranty it. Plus I have my radar detector mounted with a mirror mount so they would probably try and blame it on that anyway. I must say though the design is pretty bad. I might even pick up an extra one just in case it happens again.

I'm on my second plate, used some loctite this time, but I still have a slight vibration/wiggle that I find very annoying. I tried to tighten the screws a tad more and striped the first plate...

Here's a tip for those putting on new plates - tap the screw in the plate first, before you mount it. This was you'll get a nice pre-thread going for when you mount it in place.

My mirror has started vibrating and making an annoying noise on the highway. I am pretty sure it is loose. I am going to remove it tonight and take a look at the screw and the mounting plate. If the threads are bad, I will try and fix them and then loctite the screw. If it is too stripped, then I will go buy a new one. Definitely not worth going to the dealer over.

I read about these issues before I installed mine, so I located a couple identical size screws with a slightly longer thread. Seems to be holding up fine so far
