I look at it as something simple that should be a requirement for all drivers to know, but this is 'Merica and people are lazy and stupid.
when your state's (r.m.v.) ALLOWS anyone passing a driver's exam with an automatic transmission the legal right to drive a STANDARD transmission, then
THAT is really "obtuse."..just sayin'

I paid for this girl's driving lessons, she took 2 classes on manual and decided that she wanted auto, and so she finished her classes and took her test with an auto. Fast forward 6 months with a valid license (with 5 fender benders, and quite a few close calls that could have ended in a hospital), and she's like... "can I drive your new FRS? I promise not to crash it" .... yeah right.

In the end I think it's a generational thing. most of my younger cousins drive and prefer manuals. most of my elder cousins and friends prefere manuals only for the 2nd car or if they drive SUV or sporty cars.

Teach your wife to drive stick??

Officially men are crazy. My wife saw my new FRS ( she drives a benz ) and instantly got upset that it was a stick. She asked why I bought manual. My response " so you can't drive it". I have seen where she parks at parking lots and shudder everytime. Next thing she will want me to teach her to golf. NO WAY IN HELL. Oddly enough, I like hearing from the ladies on this board. Yep I'm crazy.

I wish the us was more like other countries in regards to having to learn manual. If you choose to "steer" a vehicle (at) vs. drive a vehicle (mt) thats your personal preference. But if you have the basics it tends do not leave you in predicaments like this.
It's a little sad she didn't know manual = stick shift = standard. Glad I drive stick and so glad I'm married. If a dude said that on a date I would have went to the bathroom and never come back.

Back in my dating days, I'd ask the guy what he drove... I wasn't particular on the type of car, I wanted to see how enthusiastic he got about it. If the answer was, "I don't know, it's grey", I was outta there!!!
