You don't have to turn them into Nigel Mansell, just the basics of getting moving.

"guy with a knife running at you in a parking lot, learn to engage 1st without stalling or die!"...seemed to be a good theme to help them adapt quickly.

Start off by telling them that the trick is to have their foot on the clutch as little as possible, if they are not morons they'll learn quickly.

I might have got this wrong. But you dont have to know how to drive a manual car to take your licens right?

Does it differ between states?

Here in the US, you just need to know how to operate the vehicle you're taking the test in for your regular driver's license.
There are separate licenses for motorcycles and big rig trucks.
The vehicle you bring for your test has to be registered and roadworthy, in good working order. If it's an automatic, fine. If it's a manual, fine. There's no specific transmission requirement.
Most average non-car folk under the age of 45 don't know how to drive a manual transmission from my experience.

Pretty sure there'll be a higher chance of your newer model girlfriend being an "automatic". The new generation is just getting lazy...What you need is a good old cougar "manual" girlfriend.

This argument doesn't stand up.

Every clutch is different, thus certain ones burn out faster than others.
