You know... At the core of this entire argument, it really isn't any different than when I want to build my daily driver into a 500+ whp monster car.

Like with my Eclipse; do I *need* 500whp and a roll cage, $5,000 dollars in suspension and brakes and wheels? Is it "safe" that I don't have airbags? Is it really necessary for me to be able to smoke my tires while rolling on the freeway?

Most people would ask me the same questions of why I need to do all that to my car.

I personally hate the "stance" stuff. But fundamentally, it isn't any different than what I and the other speed junkies modify our cars to do something drastically different than what the stock car is intended for.

I'm guessing drifting since he showed an IS he owned in a picture earlier in this thread. As far as safety, sure a roll cage in a street car is not safe without the proper equipment, but at least he's only endangering himself (I know that sounds kind of mean) and not others. That's his choice right there.

i do think you are right. i guess my question wasnt worded right. i was just curious as to whether or not the sanctioning body he runs through requires a cage for his level of competition. i dont really have a problem with that people do to/for themselves. i just fail to see a logical way to come to that conclusion.

When you tandem with another car, you need a roll cage with door bars.

Precisely, and I have the utmost respect for a well built highway monster/drag car/road race car/show car.

Yes it is... That's why the cage on my e30 and the dash on the IS say this:

Cages are required for tandem... It passes tech, it's not obtrusive, and I like the look of it, so I don't mind having it in a street car.

Set it up to behave adversely? I'm not setting out to win formula d, my cars work great just as they're set up, and look cool doing it... Really that's all that matters in drifting, doing dumb shit with your friends and having fun, competitive drifting is a total waste of time.

And I'm sorry, I didn't know that anyone who wasn't a professional racecar driver had been shunned off to the exterior forum.

Hey! everybody's different. Let the yahoos, miscreants, high school dropouts and socially inept do there own thing. It is their right. Anyone who can buy a $26000 car, get insurance for that car and qualify for a driver's license certainly deserves to do their "own thing". In the final analysis, when they are in a seedy nursing home they will look back and realize that they had done it their way.

As far as being shunned to the exterior forum, I wouldn't expect to paint my car pink and cover it in rainbow stickers then make a post in the general forum and not take shit for it, nothing to do with professional racing.
There is justification... Anyone can do whatever they want with a car, that is the justification. I got a brz because it's an awesome performing, good looking, driftable car. After what I've done to it, it still is all those things.

As for your pink rainbow comment, I'm basically gathering that you're calling anyone who modifies a car differently than the way you would is a homosexual? Real nice.

He's comparing a car that's lowered with wheels to something clearly referencing being homosexual... I think that's exactly what he's saying.

Why do pink and rainbow stickers equate to homosexual? And why is that offensive?

That's very bigoted of you.

He's just saying when you do something that is radical odds are people won't like it.

Here in Chicago rainbow stickers are used to show gay pride... That's offensive to me because I'm not gay... I'm cool with people wanting to be gay, but calling me gay is a different story.

And there's nothing radical about lowering a car and putting wheels on it. Not to mention there's a difference between saying you don't like something and calling someone gay or telling them they've ruined their car for doing something different than what you would do... I fail to see what's so difficult to grasp about this concept.

See that's a problem, "gay" has negative connotations for you when it shouldn't. Do you get offended for being called "straight"? Masculine? Feminine? Assumptions about sexuality are just bad, let alone racial or gender based stereotypes. It's an issue humanity has struggled with and will continue to struggle with, justice and equality for all is a long time off, don't be one of the people who delay that even in a minute way.

Like it or not lowering a car to near impracticality or putting on shiny wheels that only serve to please a certain subset WILL raise objections, as will putting on slicks or putting in a roll cage or stripping out the interior as will painting it pink or metallic green or putting on a body kit.

Everybody is different, there are certainly people I talk to daily who think I'm dumb for not wanting a wing + fart cannon + 19" wheels for my FRS but that's one of the few things that make car culture interesting. All you gotta say is "well it makes me happy" and let others blow the blood vessel.

or penis as the case may be.
