I can understand that but would you buy the car if auto wasn't available? How quick are the gear changes and does it blip the throttle on down shifts?

I do have an auto test drive planned for this weekend.

The auto in the 86 is awesome - seems to know what gear you want.

A nice feature is you can downshift while in drive via paddle to overtake and once the auto box sees you are done messing about it will return to auto mode.

Apparently the 3 series requires you to manually select auto after gearing down.
Also while in manual gear the auto will not gear up even if you hit the limiter. it will not however let you gear down if it will result in hitting the red.
