I drove mine like mad the first day i got it (after it was warm)
And as someone said, i bet all those brand new testdrive FRS/GT86 are redlined out of the parking lot by eager customers.

Breaking in is a matter of opinion. When I did it I just stayed off the limiter and cruise control. Other then that I drove my usual way but I tend to be harder on brakes and tires rather then the motor.

Drove my 86 like grandpa for the first month, I didnt really start pushing my 86 until I got to 1,500 miles. Maybe that's why I dont have CEL issues and Cam gear issues like some, ok I shall zip.

I kind of drove my FRS hard when I first got it to show off, and I even raced a few times. But that was before I realize that its smart to wait after 1000 miles to drive hard. Other than that my car still runs smoothly and just the same.

Lets just say I cant count on my hand the times I red lined mine on the way home. Drove it really hard, took it to the track 6 times since Jan, has 9k mi since I got it December 27, will be over 10k mi and two more track days before the end of april, so far it is still running hard. I would say you're fine.

Mostly... if you run an engine super hard when new it will cook it from the heat generated.

Hers one way ti look at it.

Diesels in trucks cant go over several thousand rpm, but they last forever. They run the same tolerances (more or less). I dont think driving your engine hard will make it break in any 'better' but you will break it in faster. Some trucks dont stop consuming oil for tens of thousands of k's. But they will eventually stop.

Unless of coarse you take it too the highway and sit on 2000rpm all day. But you wouldnt do this because the manufacture recommends not to.
Another point is, how long do you want to keep the vehicle? I dont think your going to need a rebuild on the pistons and bores till at least +300000k's. And by then you will be having far more problems than just blowby.

Drove mine around yesterday for a few hours and tried to stay calm but the damn car just goads me into pushing it.

I did not do anything too bad bud I did push her up to 6.5k rpm once or twice and couldnt help but break her @ss loose a few time in corners

Just drive your car the way you normally would... Dont beat on it every second u get but dont granny it around town either. a nice balance is perfect. now i do think u should respect the owners manual and not redline the car until it hits 1000miles, and keep it below the 4k range. u can still have fun and push the motor hard without redlining.

I redlined the car a few hours I got it. Now almost 1 year later and 11,xxx miles its still yet to have one problem.

don't worry manual says okay to take the engine out of break in rpms in cases of emergency which showing off is lol seriously it should be fine, your engines life will be determined more by how well you maintain it then how hard you push it IMO

I figure until someone ponies up the billion dollars to rigorously study thousands each of countless different engines using a variety of break in methods...we're never going to have a real answer, so enjoy.

This is how I broke in my STI. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Most STIs burn a quart of oil between oil change. Mine doesn't burn any.
