Too Soon? Drove my FR-S a little hard
I just picked up my FR-S yesterday and my family wanted me to take them out for a spin in it.
So I took two of my boys out one at a time and let them see what she felt like. Each drive was maybe 5 minutes and a few miles but I kinda drove her hard to let them see what she could do. I maybe got close to 7k rpm and maybe showed them the acceleration a little more than I should have. Was it too soon for me to do this? Did any of you push your FR-S any when it was new? Hindsight now I am thinking maybe I should not have done that and hope I didnt screw anything up. |

It's fine. Your engine will be better off in the long term [lower oil consumption, improved ring sealing] than those that chose an unnaturally timid break-in.

I did so too, the night I got her. I rode her so damn hard she was just begging for it...
But now I've been taking the "timid" approach to breaking her in. |

If your engine was warmed up at the time, shouldn't be any issues. Some guys even prefer hard break-ins.

She was warm.
It was so dang fun. I have a back road near me and with my oldest he wanted me to drift the car (hes 15). So I turned VSC Sport on and took a 80 degree turn about 30mph and let the rear end slide around. Man it was fun (and scary). Maybe Ill take it easy for the next few hundred miles. |

Don't fret about it. Just break it in how you see fit.
I took a more gentle approach myself and I've worried quite a bit as to whether or not I did things right. Everybody has an opinion on how to best break in a car and the entire internet can debate the subject until everyone is blue in the face. In my opinion, you have a better chance at figuring out voodoo science than figure out the best way to break in a car. My advice is break it in the way you feel most comfortable with and just enjoy the car.

Engines are very rugged nowadays and Ive heard that they are somewhat broken in from the factory. I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt you really have to wait till 1k to rev the motor (you probably need less than 500 miles if at all).

This, just enjoy your car. There is no solid proof that going soft on your car vs hard does anything to them when new.

The whole breaking in your car properly thing is kind of irrelevant in modern cars. It used to be important and now the fad just kind of got stuck in peoples minds. Like others have said as long as its warmed up and oil temp is good you'll be fine. If you want some peace of mind go easy on it for the next 750 miles and then let er rip.

If it brought a smile to you and your family's faces, then no harm is done. Some of the best bonding time I've had with my dad was drifting, driving hard, and burning on some back roads. Just have fun!
