I know people are saying that Mobil 1 might be bad for the car, but I keep hearing that the current 0W20 oil that Toyota is using is Mobil 1. That is what I was planning on running. I've been on too many forums an heard too many dealer nightmares to allow the dealer to touch my car more than necessary. I don't mind paying for the oil changes.
Any confirmation on this? |

I think that when companies provide oil to manufacturers for their OEM oil, it can often be a completely different formulation than what they will sell retail. My local Scion dealer wants $12/qt for their oil. At that price, it better have gold flakes or something in it :-)
Instead, I bought a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 0W-20 from Walmart for $25. I'm tempted to send for analysis afterwards just to see if it's really as bad as people have claimed. At less than half the price of more "high end" brands, I can afford to change my oil twice as often and still come out (financially) ahead. I've used Mobil 1 for ten years when I had my Evo VIII with no issues whatsoever. I seriously doubt it's going to melt the FA20 engine. |

There's a thread on the forums here about this stuff (link below). It's a nano-oil. I've been reading about them for awhile now and have been considering giving it a try. Your thoughts?

Hmm, for some reason the first link to the forum topic is dead for me. That said, if this stuff is $22/qt. I'd be really curious how they can justify that price point compared to mass market products. The oil market feels very loose to me with makers spouting all kinds of crazy claims. I'm waiting for someone to make a motor with with "snake extract", for extra long life.

The claim in the link was a 6HP increase in the FR-S. They did have a dyno sheet. It's a race oil but you'll notice they make a 0-20. The kit apparently comes with a test kit to test your oil so you can tell when it needs changed. OP said someone had 20K miles on a Jag and it still did not need changed.
Nano-oils I believe will be the waive of the future, but there's just not a lot of info out there. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2 |

I'd love to run an Amsoil, but the FRS being a DD that will get EXPENSIVE! I figured I would give Mobil 1 a shot as it is readily available and relatively inexpensive. All that being said, I could totally get why Mobil 1 could be a supplier for Toyota as, like I said above, it's cheap and it's easy to get ahold of. Toyota charging $12/quart is just a dealer being a dealer. Same reason why when I had my M3, they charged me $13/quart for Caster Oil 10W60 when you could get it for $8 pretty much anywhere online. I wish I could get this verified, though. Edit: Looking at Toyota oil, it's around $7.41 a quart online if you buy it in a 12qt box, so really about the same price a Mobil 1. I'll just change it myself using the Toyota oil. Last edited by suaveflooder; 03-29-2013 at 04:34 PM. |

Of course! Not sure I'm gonna go with that seller, I need to look around a little more, not so much for price, but to make sure it's legit. I'll keep you updated! :happy0180:

I pay $5.05/litre at my local dealer for Genuine Toyota synthetic 0W20 SN. That's in Canada, so $11/quart in the States is pretty brutal. It is made by ExxonMobil, but I don't believe it's the same as Mobil 1. This oil gets very good reviews, and has a bit of a following over on the BITOG forums. I have been using it in the FR-S since late last summer. The car doesn't burn a drop between oil changes (I do change it often though at about 5000kms/~3K miles). I also use it in my dad's Accord, and in my sister's Civic. They have no problems with oil consumtion either.
I'd recommend getting the oil filter from your local Subaru dealer. It should be about half the cost for the exact same filter you get from the Toyota/Scion dealer. You will want Subaru part # 15208AA130. Don't forget to get a new drain plug washer as well.
