Totally understand.. I was hesitant at first because of the lower MPG's of E85 too.. but once I looked at the comparisons & tried it, the lower MPG isn't that bad once you consider it costs less than premium (per gallon) to fill up.. that offsets the lower MPG somewhat. Plus your engine performs a little better (and cleaner) too. But yea, it's not for everyone.

Well, just in case anyone here is interested in the Ecutek reflash.. you can get the whole kit now (cable, license & tune) for $699.. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31010
That's an awesome deal.. but I just saw it, and the group buy is already about to end. I have no experience with that particular tuner though.. just thought I'd post it for those interested. |

I thought cars designed for high ethanol content were so-called "flex fuel vehicles" with different components. Do the 86 cars have fuel systems designed for E85? Doesn't it void the warranty to run an unauthorized type of fuel? What is the current cost of a replacement engine & fuel system? |

![]() Everyone who's an "expert" on this forum (ECU tuners & people who know way more about car 'tech' stuff than me) says it's safe to run E85 on these cars. Of course, I've researched it myself and don't see any evidence to the contrary. You can go to any mechanic who's worth their money and ask them to inspect our cars too.. they'll tell you the same thing (I've tried it ).It's a little-known fact to the general public, but ALL CARS after the early 90's (some say mid-80's) can run on E85.. Ethanol was introduced into gasoline during that time, so ALL cars were required to be built with fuel/engine systems that would NOT corrode/leak/break in the presence of Ethanol. Don't quote me on this, but from what I've read, the only limiting factors for MOST cars in converting to E85 is the fuel injectors.. and (to a lesser degree) the fuel pump. Since you need MORE flow of fuel when using E85, alot of 'standard' injectors won't be able to handle the extra flow. Luckily, our cars already have a beefy enough set of injectors & fuel pump to handle E85. Having said all that, if you blow up your engine tomorrow on E85.. no one is responsible for that happening except you. Not to scare anyone away from using E85 though.. It burns CLEANER, cooler and more efficiently than gasoline, meaning your engine's combustion chamber stays a tad bit cooler = better for higher compression engines like ours, and that makes it more effective for squeezing out an extra 10-20% more power than gasoline too. |

Currently, what is the most power a tune has made using premium versus E85? In other words - how much more power is E85 making? That seems to be the main motivation for making the switch.

It's not just a power increase, but for turbo/sc guys and those who auto-cross.. the E85 keeps their engine a bit cooler too. Its well known our cars don't have an oil cooler, and our oil temps can get pretty high if you keep the revs up for an extended period of time. I'm doing a "butt dyno" test on my own car to try & see if I can feel a difference. I did my dyno tune on E85, and wanted to do a 93 tune too, but it was just too time-consuming to run my tank dry, then schedule another dyno session that same day.. esp. since there were people waiting to use the dyno after me. And I don't know the MOST power someone's ever made N/A from E85.. but I hope I'm near the top somewhere Of course, I have FA20club's headers & over/front pipe to help..First dyno (blue/purple) was only with FA20club's CAI, on 93 octane.. everything else was stock. 2nd dyno (black) was on E85.. and I added FA20club's header (with hi-flo cat) + over/front pipe (catless, but resonated).

@reeves Alright man, if you're going alone, then you'll pass my house haha you should stop by. I can show you some roads where it's fun to drift, and/or straight drive haha. If you get on 85N you get off at exit 105 and I'm right there.
