The GT86 has won the Best Coupe Car from the Scottish Car of the Year 2012 held at Glasgow on 14 October 2012.
The Toyota 86 has been judged the 2012 Car of the Year in Australia at the annual Drive awards. The 86 was also named Best Performance Car under A$60,000 and won the People's Choice vote.[47]
In South Africa the 86 has been nominated in the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) Car Of The Year 2013 (together with the Toyota Yaris 1.5 HSD Xs and 2012 Lexus GS 350 EX; making Toyota the only manufacturer with multiple nominations.[48]

if there are any cars to lose to, the Cayman is it. anybody that cares about sports car should drive a Cayman once.

I can understand the Cayman from which the car's engineering roots are partially based, but a Golf?

Agreed, the Golf (and technically the A3) is a great everyman's car, but it's hard to compare directly to the 86.

I sold my '10 Golf TDi to get the FR-S, and believe me, the Golf is a great car, in many ways a better choice for me than the FR-S. But, it wasn't nearly as much fun to drive, didn't have the "bling" value, and left me a bit cold. It did get 45MGG on the road though, and that makes up for a lot of faults. The main reason I got rid of it was the fear something would go wrong with the electrics, and it would start nickel and diming me to death. Anyway, life is too short to drive boring cars, and I'll probably trade the FR-S for something else after a few years. YMMV,
