If I have the choice in between

Perrin intake system + perrin inlet hose = 452.98$
TRD= 525$

I will add the extra 73$ anytime to go TRD. more filter area, easy maintenance.
I will save that 73$ the first time I have to clean the filter. Yes my hour of working labour cost more than 73$
Also I can't believe that some engineer ( I'm an engineer myself) are so stupid to invest in expansive mold for plastic cast part if it doesn't bring anything more than a cheap tube with a cone filter at the end.

I am in a similar boat to you. Trying to decide if it is worth my time to pay Toyota to do this at the dealership or worth saving my money to do it myself.

What I really am more concerned with is if the TRD Cold Air intake is actually going to do something and is not only cosmetic. If its just cosmetic I would rather buy an aftermarket CAI and put it on myself.

I don't think TRD does anything mechanically that's just cosmetic.

Ok I live in DFW Texas and the dealer I went to is Freeman Toyota.

Here are details about other upgrades they quoted me on (all prices are installed):

Leather seats - $1495
Shark Fin Antenna - $125
5 Axis Body Kit w/spoiler - $2495 (not sure if this includes the lowering kit or not will ask monday)
TRD Exhaust - $1235
18' Black Matte Wheels and tires $1695
Clear sheild by 3m - $695
Window Tint - $299
TRD Cold Air intake - $525

Last time I had inquired about the exhaust I was quoted $1100 (this was at another dealer) so I am curious if this dealer is gouging me or if prices have gone up. I plan on calling Lewisville Scion/Toyota today to see if they quote me the same prices. My dealer claimed all prices are fixed by Scion and there is no variance between dealers or extra mark up.

When I take delivery of the car if I plan on seeing if they will give me decent $$ for the stock tires/wheels and if they do (I would take anything over $800) then I will likely go ahead and get the tires/wheels I picked out at the dealer.

You're not researching hard enough if you are paying that much for the inlet hose and CAI.

FT86SpeedFactory - Perrin Intake and Inlet hose with 2% off, $399.53

TRD is a ripoff. When will you learn? Apparently simple math is hard for an engineer. If it takes you longer than 30 minutes to get to the Perrin filter after doing the full installation once already, you probably shouldn't be working on your car.

I think it's quite early to say that the TRD is a ripoff. Seeing as almost every other intake barely makes any power over a $40 drop in on a dyno seems to me that every intake on the market is more or less a rip off. The TRD essentially allows you to use a larger drop in and has a straighter path post filter. It still draws cold air from the front of the car like every other CAI on the market and the stock intake box. Who knows, this thing might actually make good power. Hard telling not knowing.

Most of these intakes haven't been tuned past 190 whp either which is where the stock intake begins to suffer. TRD never provides numbers on anything.

Yes I'm searching enough. because I'm sure when TRD release to the market you also can get better deal. My toyota dealer will for sure offer me 10% discount. so I compare full price to full price. Sorry scientist way.

Any way I will never buy any of those it's just crazy money for a few HP compare to the Oem airbox with drop in filter and a bit of modding.

I'll keep that money for a good header. Or saving for forced induction.

Aren't these all aftermarket parts, as in non-OEM? I didn't know dealers could order or install parts like these.

What I would like to see is a flow bench test of the stock intake system, with all the resonators & inlet tube attached. Once you get a CFM rating on it, it should be simple to figure out how much HP it will support. I have a feeling it's not the bottleneck people think it is...maybe one of the vendors will do this to show how much better their intake flows versus stock.

for me the only part that might be a bottle neck is the snorkle. But with some thinking i'm sure their is way to make some cheap PVC water pipe to replace it and remove that restriction and keep fresh air.

I love PVC water pipe to build my own custom intake (cheap, all kind of bend, good glue to make sea and very light). My other custom supercharged car run with water pipe DIY intake from charger to filter since 5 year and it's a dially.Never had a leak.
