Our cars will run on 87 if you have to put it in.. I've been out of the mechanic field for a few years.. But when I was doing my ASE classes and schools and stuff.. There wasn't a car that is a USDM vehicle that couldn't run on 87.. They all had to have a map.. Even Ferrari or Lamborghini ... They couldn't be responsible for a engine that blew out of warranty because all that is around is 87 octane and the driver had to use it.. For instance the sandy incident, 87 was all that was available in some places.. If you had to put it in your car and the engine would detonate, even with that sticker, the manufacture is still responsible, it would be a law suit they wouldn't want to handle.. It'll run different.. You especially notice it in the summer months.. But it should still run acceptable.. I thought about running 87 for half a tank to see the differences in this car.. My 93 probe with the Jdm KLZE engine was suppose to run 93+ but ran just fine with no noticeable difference in performance.. Unless i was driving up the only hill in central Texas.. Then I could hear a slight knock.. Other wise fuel mileage and performance stayed the same.. I remember when I used to cry over 1.75$ for premium.. We have a station here in Barstow off the highway to get the suckers that don't turn left and drive a block that pay 4.35 to 4.80 for 91.. It's like 3.75 a block down the road the other way..

I have had problems after two fillups. The first one lasted for about 1,000 miles. After the second time it happened, I added a half bottle of HEET additive. It went away quickly after that. I believe that the FR-Z is particularly sensitive to gas quality problems due to the dual nature of the fueling system.

Bad gas in my old car messed up the timing in one of the cylinders causing the car to throw a misfire code. had to replace spark plugs and add fresh gas to burn up the crap.

I have also had issues with Shell fuel in the past and now refuse to use it unless it's an emergency. I had a moderately modified s/c '98 Grand Prix for 8 years and I gave Shell a try (93 oct) three times it's whole life. Every time I lost a noticeable amount of power and got about 2-3mpg less. Same for current my '07 Silverado and '86 Dodge Daytona cs turbo.

Mobil 93 is just as good as Shell 93, and the quality control is probably better. Shell cuts corners.

Shell doesn't "cut corners". All top tier gas is the same shit. It comes from the same pipeline, same refinery. It's the additives, added to the actual tanker making the delivery, that make the difference. The issue can be that each brands additive package can do different things to different cars in different environments, climates, ect. One Brands additives may dilute the fuel, another's may provide better gas mileage, and another's may focus on "less engine deposits". Also, what's great for one engine, may not run so great on the next.

"Bad gas" can be attributed to numerous factors. For one, you can never know if the truck bringing the fuel to a particular station is putting what they're advertising in the tanks. There's regulations to make sure the octane is correct, but no one is monitoring the additives package. Shady stations have been known to do this.

My advice is to pick a station you trust and stick with them whenever possible. Use a place that maintains their tanks and gets plenty of traffic, so the gas never sits around too long.

I for one swear by Shell V Power and my cars run great, so sometimes it's just a personal thing and a perception that makes one prefer a particular station over the others.

Here's a list of Top Tier stations. Do some research so you can see what I'm saying isn't bs, then pick one and stick with them. Whatever you do, don't go to anyone not on that list. Valero, Hess, Eagle, or whatever else all use a standard additive package. Yet, even with that being said, there are some that would claim ALL brands, regardless of being Top Tier are no different from the rest. Go ahead and Google, "who makes the best gas". After hours of reading, you'll never get an definitive answer...

I've used Shell V-Power 93 in my Mustang Bullitt for 3 years and it loves it. For some crazy reason my MX-5 doesn't run as well on the Shell but it loves the local grocery store's 'unbranded' 93 instead. I have used it exclusively for the MX-5 for over 20K miles.

Began the break-in of the FR-S with the Shell, knowing how well it works in the Bullitt. It ran OK, acted a little better with each fill-up and more miles. Plus I got used to how the car behaved with more driving.

So the last time I pulled into the Shell station near me the tanker was there filling the underground tanks. Because I NEVER fill my car while they are filling the tanks, I ran up the street to the grocery store gas station. Figured "what the hell" and I did have a ton of discount points I could use. Filled the tank with 93 and left. After a few minutes I realized the car was running much better, more seat-of-the-pants power and better throttle response too. Now after driving it more I realize that like the MX-5, the FR-S loves the grocery store gas - it's like racing fuel there is such a noticeable difference in how it runs as well as the power.

Guess that makes me a believer that every car has a favorite fuel, it's just a matter of finding the right one. And using the unbranded grocery store gas doesn't bother me at all. It comes from the same local (and reputable) distributor each time and I've used it in all my cars (except the Bullitt) for years with no issues. It's available all over my area and it's a lot cheaper as well.
