Yeah, I think it is considered a 'safety' issue there. Not sure how it is today but years back when I was driving through NJ often, the prices there were cheaper than anywhere else in the Northeast. Plus you didn't need to get out of your car. I used to fill up when I crossed the border and again before I left. Loved it!

I wouldn't prefer this today however, in a car I care about - I'd much rather pump my own for so many reasons...

I've been told any number of different reasons for why it's illegal, but I believe it has to do with keeping down unemployment mostly. Of course that's perfectly OK when you have such low gas taxes and dirt cheap gas. Full service for Premium around me is going to cost almost $4.50 a gallon.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. I didn't realize I didn't put the gas cap back on the car from filling it up on Tuesday after work. I drove the car from the gas station to home ~30 miles, then drove the car to work the next morning ~45 miles without a light on the entire way. As soon as I got to my car after work yesterday I noticed the gas cap was open lol. I closed it and started the car, then BAM! CEL! Limp mode, no cruise control.

Took it to the dealership, they reset the code and told me to remember the gas cap next time.

Clembo's pretty much right on it. Having a "trained professional" pump your gas for you reduces the insurance premium for the gas station, thus passing the savings onto the customer.

I'm not a fan.

The OP's camera/phone has chosen to properly "expose" the lights on the dash which causes the gauge face to be underexposed. If you look at the bottom of the tach you can see it's not black.

Had that happen to me today after filling the tank, was scared at first, then I found this thread. Cleared the CEL with the GoPoint app and so far so good.

It happened to me when I was filling up with e85 for the first time so it freaked me out too.

It's because the ECU thinks there air in the lines somewhere.

hate these people hitting it with pump
So, all these people have to do it put the nozzle into the car, preferably without banging it on every part of the car, pump the gas, remove nozzle, AND TIGHTEN CAP, and they can't get that right? Granted they are not pulling down six figures, but where is the minimal effort?

I had a similar experience. Went to NJ for a wedding and rented a car. Stopped for gas and was trying to operate the pump when the attendant came running out to stop me. It took me a solid minute to figure out why, I could not believe I could not pump my own gas. As a kid in TX, I started pumping gas for my mom at 8.

Got this CEL and limp mode on Friday... talk about putting a damper on a holiday weekend. I cleared it to see if it would come back and it didn't. The car hesitated slightly for the rest.of the tank and generally ran like crud. It felt like the timing was being pulled under full throttle acceleration I did try to cinch up the gas cap more, but it was on correctly and tight. I also got 24 mpg on a mostly highway trip where I expect to see 28+.

My question is... could this be caused by bad gas?

I filled up at my local Shell which normally has pretty high standards, but I'm starting to wonder now, we've had two different bike weeks for the past two weeks and so maybe the tanks were low and I got more dirt/water, or the owner put a lower grade in the tank accidentally or maybe not so accidentally (Premium is 50 cents more per gallon)
Filled at a Hess station that I normally use by my work on the way back from Fayetteville and the car started running fine again by the time I was a few miles down the road,.

Scared the hell out of me...

I had several bad experiences with Shell as well
I filled it up on my GTR and couldn't figure out
Why it kept knocking until I went across the street to Chevron
And never had another problem

Yes. There has been more than one occasion where in my old car I put gas in and it immediately started shuddering and the CEL came on. After running through that tank and putting a higher quality gas in the car ran fine.

Thanks, it helps to have a sanity check.

Shell used to be THE gas for Subarus... back when I had my WRX wagon, it was what it ran the happiest on. My Civic Si wasn't picky about fuel... which might've covered up the fuel quality going downhill.

I've used this place for years, but I'm beginning to worry that they are going downhill in quality and I'm starting to wonder if the other times I've filled up there have been responsible for the car running less happily.

I won't be stopping there any time soon any more.
