As I said above forum member who works for Toyota management has been leaking a few things. This is what he has had to say lately.

"Ok...seems that some of you would like some more info on the FT.

Right, and this is as "unofficially official" as I can be right now.

The FT is only currently planned for a non-turbo version at this stage. The Chief Engineer and global plans for the car is to redefine the brand to be one that embraces the aftermarket tuners. That's why all the wild show concepts so far have come from HKS and TRD.

As you know the engine block is straight Subaru boxer but all the major headwork and final has been done for the project by Yamaha...and it's a f*cking screamer!.....it doesn't even have the subie note....in fact I thought it was an inline 4 when I heard it.

The reason why the subie block was chosen was because anything up and including a WRC engine will drop straight in on the standard engine mounts. Meaning there will be heaps of subie tuners looking to do serious power versions. It also has the lowest centre of gravity of any production car on the market today....anywhere!

The interior is very strange....and very spartan. I fact I found out today the car will not even have an audio head unit. It's basically wired for Ipod as standard...and that's all.

The final production car (which I have seen) is very close to the concept at Frankfurt. In fact, the side on shot is identical to the real car. The production car has a slightly higher bonnet profile to meet NCAP pedestrian regs.

As I said some months ago I have already driven it. Overall it is a really strong feeling package and feels like it can handle so much more power in the chassis. But overall I got the impression that the driveline was much better engineered that the S15 and it is very well balanced.

As for expectations...I think it will clean up to be honest. It's Golf Gti cash with WAY more appeal. In europe they are chasing Scirocco market share....but I think it's going to be a cult car honestly."Quote

Hope you guy's find this interesting as well.

"Sounds like a redneck's fishing boat chasing a large mouth bass around a lake"

The near stall when the guy dumped the clutch to get a squeak out of the tire(s) and the s l o w RPM drop has me going straight back over to the Ford Mustang build site. The emulation of the powertrain from a 81 through 85 VW Bus just is not hitting me in the right spot. THIS is factory exhaust boys and girls:

and this is only $2,000 more than what the FT-86 is supposed to cost:

Everybody likes a good sounding exhaust, but people that ONLY care about the sound of the exhaust are called posers, right?

So let's compare the performance of a Mustang to an FT86. Bench racing will have to wait until the FT86 gets released, but we can assume the FT86 will be quite a bit lighter.

Let's see why that's important:

A is for Acceleration: This is where your torque per tons and pounds per horsepower ratios come into play. The Mustang can make lots of horsepower if you throw money at it and has a natural displacement advantage even with the base engine. But it's a beastly heavy tank compared to the little FT86 and that's not an easy fix. The Mustang is built Ford Tough to drag race and has plenty of room for rear tires so it has the advantage here. But a lighter FT-86 with equal horsepower should beat the heavier Mustang every time. As STREET cars, both can increase horsepower but the Mustang hits a wall where it can't put the power down without running slicks in the back. Oops Mustang.

B is for Braking: This is just negative acceleration. Again, the ratios come into play. Again, vehicle mass plays a major part. The low, light, balanced car with big sticky tires should win. Can the FT86 put enough rubber on the road or sport big disks and calipers? Probably. Maybe not off the showroom floor, but the aftermarket will provide answers.

C is for Cornering: Not only is the FT86 much lighter but the mass is lower to the ground. Can the Mustang put enough rubber to the road to have an advantage? Probably not. A higher cornering speed means that the FT86 gets a head start on the Mustang at the start of every straightaway.

D is for All of the above: Swap a 5.0L Coyote V8 in the FT86, then swap the 2.0L NA Subaru engine in the Mustang. The 2.0L NA Subaru powered Mustang would be slow as hell. The 5.0L powered FT-86 would be a supercar. But why would you swap in a Ford engine when you could swap in a Chevy V8? Amirite? lol Back in reality, only built STI engines will likely be swapped in during the first few years. Doubling the horsepower of a stock FT86 should make it a monster and it'll be nice to finally see Subaru powered smoky burnouts everywhere you go.

E is for Economy: Inexpensive, very low CdA, and a 4 cylinder will allow FT86 owners to spend money on speed parts instead of gasoline. Don't Mustangs have high insurance? Doesn't all that torque and all those extra parts trying to push that heavy car break things and send you straight to the stealership?

F is for Flat Four: You brought up the VW bus but omitted any Porsche. Tsk, tsk. Here's something from Ford's own website. Even Henry Ford himself knew the advantage of a flat four (...Flat Ford???).

"By the summer of 1904, Ford had a new driver, Frank Kulick, who started winning races in a car powered by a pair of two-cylinder Model A engines bolted together to form a flat four. The engine produced 20 horsepower, but the car was very light — eventually down to 881 pounds. Kulick often beat much more powerful but also much heavier cars, and this was one of the first race cars to prove the advantage of a good power-to-weight ratio."

Henry Ford even wanted to build an X engine, IIRC. Google it.

EDIT: 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 is 3,632 lbs according to Ford documents.

"The target price for the car in most markets is MX5.

However, I was in a global planning conference with the Aussies last week and they are hoping to drop it into Oz for sub $40K.

The falling AUD my kybosh that one though."Quote

"I do have photos but will seriously lose my job (and probobly sued) if I post them anywhere near the web.

Toyko Motorshow next month and all will be revealed!

Oh, as for the turbo version, well that's not actually confirmed anywhere. We understand that there is a new 1.6 litre with over 260hp under development at Yamaha....if that is true it will be a f*cking screamer! We do know that the turbo motor will need to be Euro6 compliant. "Quote
