Nice! I'm doing this as soon as I can get to the store to find a 1 7/8" plug.

I couldn't find the right size plug at any local auto parts stores, so I ordered the 1 7/8" plug. I guess I'll be doing this next weekend.

The Subaru engineers must be having a field reading this thread.
How about two scoops?

Much better placement!
Can they still get the front on or does that need a new front end?

I didn't plug mine since its prefilter. I get more air in the box (hot air but still more air).

(don't bother telling me about the blocked radiator or water ingestion you think will happen)

It should be safe enough on cold dry days.

I don't believe heat will be an issue and I don't plan on doing any river crossings. The 86 is my DD and I won't be throwing out the original parts. If I do have any problems I will post them up here for others to be aware of.

I covered the hole going to the resonator inside the airbox with some duct tape to try it out before I commit to drilling out the rivets. I have red trd sound changer tube, and it was noticably louder with the resonator hole covered. I stopped and disconnected the tube so I could hear if there was any difference with the sound outside the car. It was a bit louder, but just barely. It sounds good though with the sound tube installed. This is with the stock filter element by the way.
