Has anyone deleted the resonator in the stock airbox? or made a larger snorkel?

I was going to custom mod my airbox to delete the resonator and possibly make a larger snorkel or modify the stock airbox on the snorkel side to make it larger.

Also going to delete these two on the snorkel

^ Stole Perrins images. Hope they don't mind! This will all be an attempt to get more HP out of my Perrin silicone inlet tube and drop in filter.

Thoughts? :happy0180:

I too would like to know.

I'll be doing this sat or sunday. I wont be able to do any before or after pulls though.

All of those are resonators. Why would you want to delete them?

Cade01 02-20-2013 01:11 AM

so you can get the sound of a cold air intake with just a drop in filter, and maybe a little better flow, I'm not sure on that though.

The resonators are put there to create better flow. I don't know why you'd want to remove it.

When the valve closes right after intake air inside your intake has nowhere to go. A pressure wave is created as soon as the valve closes and that wave rebounds backwards towards the entry point. The resonators allow these high pressure air waves to expand allowing the new air that was sucked in to remain in your intake for the next cycle.

I guess I'll play devil's advocate:

If the resonators are so great, why do we see gains with aftermarket intakes? Perrin and FA20 Club for example...

Xanatos 02-20-2013 02:16 AM

Flow rate of the filter. Look at the tons of drop-ins that produce gains.

Cade01 02-20-2013 02:26 AM

I don't think the resonators plays big a part as you think. I think they are mostly to control sound, because they seem to think people wouldn't like induction noises and for the most part they're right(as far as average people go, not enthusiasts)

It would seem redundant to pipe in a noise generator to the cabin if they wanted to reduce intake noise.

Also, many have reported a performance increase when they take out the stock snorkel.

True, but it is a different noise and I've heard of manufacturers doing stupid things that make no sense. If there was no ill effects I would do it with a drop in filter just for the extra sound with some power rather than pay the ridiculous amounts that are being asked for the AM intakes.
