Plus my sides start hurting (I think it has to do with not doing enough breathing exercises during the warm up run) and I start getting shin splints (which I believe is either because of my shoes which I find aren't that unlikely and because I don't do calf raises against something to get them warmed up).

That and I don't know what to do to distract myself from thinking about how I'm running or how my breathing is and how tired I'll get. I was more of a sprinter than a long runner. :/ Basketball, softball, track and occasional 2 hand touch football. I also did cross country but I could never EVER get as far as the people doing 13 mile runs (excluding warm up and cool down) in a day within an hour. :/

Iono. I got the sprinter thighs. Lol But any help I would love. :happy0180:
A little trick I discovered aside from stretching (which I recommend doing before every run) is to eat a banana. The potassium and magnesium in them make for a decent source of electrolytes if Gatorade isn't your thing. It'll help alleviate a decent amount of the fatigue and cramping you get from distance running. A decent breathing exercise I used to use to meter my breathing properly without thinking is the "in through the nose, out through the mouth" trick; it'll condition you to inhale in a controlled manner and exhale naturally.

Distractions distractions distractions, for a lot of people (myself included) distractions are necessary for any sort of running over a mile. You can listen to music and think (I'm a loser so I often think about myself as an anime character or with super powers while listening to drum & bass or electronica and create little scenarios in my head. I know it sounds weird but putting yourself mentally in a situation that would normally get your adrenaline going does great things for your stamina while running, also usually requires enough effort to distract you completely), High Contrast or Haduken make for great running music IMO.
If that doesn't work for you, try listening to something talk related. If you have a favorite morning show or podcast you like to listen to that works really well. My friend can't listen to music while she runs, it doesn't work well enough to distract her but she listens to podcasts from her favorite radio talkshow and claims it works wonders.

Shin splints, I'll give you the most honest recommendation I can. If you're going to be doing any sort of serious distance running (I.E. in excess of 4-5mi at a time) then I HIGHLY recommend going to a running store and getting yourself professionally fitted in a set of running shoes that match the way you move/way your feet strike while running. It's not expensive and most places will work with you in a prices ranging from $80-$160. There are a lot of running shoes on the market that no professional in their right mind would ever recommend avid runners.
*cough*zigs*cough*
*cough*shox*cough*

So my advice is to get yourself fitted for a good pair of running sneakers, and find a distraction that works. The rest will fall into place and you'll be knocking out 10mi runs like it's your job in under two months. :happy0180:

Hmmm.. I'll get on that. Thanks!

I always.. did a warm up run then stretched guess I'll change that... and I've always had a banana before the run since certain gaterade actually messes with the PH level in my body.

Cheers!:happy0180:

I just lost my TV picture, WTH. Rebooting the box to see if that does the trick. Internet still works though. It tells me "this channel is currently unavailable", on every channel. Both the DVR box and the regular one. I really don't want to have to call Verizon.

Won our first lacrosse game 11-1. Even though I play defense, I took two face offs (with no practice) and won both and played midfield with my 4 foot pole. Weird game for me, but hey we creamed them
