That's pretty win-win if you ask me. Both are pretty fun cars, just in different ways. The focus would be a vastly superior appliance though. If you only have 1 car, it probably shouldn't be a brz/frs. It's just a bit too focused on being a driving machine. Hot hatches were made for young people that need a sporty ride that can do it all. Just my opinion.

I'm in the same boat myself and I'm finding it to be a very difficult decision. I don't currently need the extra two doors and trunk space of the ST, but I can't say for sure it wouldn't be useful in the future. The FR-S would be a perfect car for me right now, and when I sat in one I felt like I could drive a million miles an hour. As a year round DD though I just don't know that it's the most practical choice. It's basically coming down to do I use my head or my heart when I pick between the two.

I owned a 03 Focus SVT before the FR-S and test drove both the Focus ST and the FR-S. In the end when I sat down to talk price with the Ford dealer I really couldn't even justify buying the focus. For me it was way too busy with the number of screens/gauges and extra stuff in the car. It was fun to stomp on the accelerator and the brakes did stop it well but overall during the test drives the FR-S made me smile, the Focus didn't. At the same time even though it is my DD I didn't really worry about space constraints since I live in the same town as my parents and can borrow their pickup if i need the space.

It's hard to beat the practicality though.

I think I'm just gonna have to drive em both because all the videos on youtube and articles online aren't making the choice any easier. |

I was stuck with this decision a few months back when I had my Toyota 86 on order. The 86 to me was more fun to drive but the Focus had plenty of torque/power and practicality, not only that it felt alot more solidly built compared to the 86.
In the end I cancelled my 86 order and chose the Focus, imo it's a much better daily driver and is still lots of fun when you want it to be. If I was going on track alot I would have gone the 86 but since I already have a Miata for that purpose there was really no need for another impractical sports car. It all depends on what you want/need from a car, they're both great choices but for different reasons. Last edited by green_comet; 02-25-2013 at 05:52 AM. |

I'd say let your sister test drive both. If she feels the Focus brings a bigger smile, get the Focus. If she likes the BR-Z, then she gets the BR-Z. I look at this way, if you see yourself driving this car down the road it still puts a smile on your face, then it was a good choice. I always have a smile on my face with my FR-S and can't wait to upgrade this bad boy with a suerpcharger or turbo charger in the near future.

if she likes the focus just wait a year and get it for half price on the second hand market!! The fr-s you need to buy new it looses practically no value compared to the ford!
I was looking at these 2 cars just a week ago and I called my buddy who sells used cars and asked him to find me a used fr-s. He calls me up 2 days later and he says all i got are 10-15K milles going for 24500 ... go buy a new one lol. And he said if you like the focus just wait a year those cars loose soooo much value fast! |
