Winter tires are not just for snow they are engineered to perform like, well, a tire in freezing temps. The stock summers aren't just bad in the snow they are bad when it's cold. I only take the FRS out when well over 40 because I did not by snow tires.

Now I could take this a step farther and begin explaining how people who think that just because they have all-seasons they are fine are ignorant but that's not what this thread is about.

Congrats on the car.

waiting just a week for your desired color makes me laugh because I had to 'settle' for Firestorm when I hunted down my car because there were no others available. At this point I'd truly prefer no other color than my red headed beauty but at the time it wasn't my first choice.

Hey, I'm looking around on craigslist for some used snow tires... Anyone recommend a good size? I've been searching but I'm not finding much. I'm thinking a set of 16" steelies for right now, but I don't know what would be a good tire size for snow in the FR-S.

Be aware the stock tires are not all season - they are SUMMER tires! (There should be a warning sticker for 4 season states...)

Bolt pattern (5x100) and offset (+43?) is right about the same as the WRX, and many other Subaru models. WRX originally came with 16" rims - which can be found pretty cheap these days. You find stock 17" rims from Subaru models with all season tires for $400 all the time.

Yeah, winter tires would be best, but even a set of all seasons would be safer than running summer tires in the snow.

Check Craigslist. Stuff like this pops up all the time:
http://columbus.craigslist.org/pts/3558653914.html

Now buying used rims and tires may be a gamble (cracked, warped, plugged tire, not balanced, etc) but if you buy them cheap enough (but not too cheap!) you won't be upside down on them. Or just get a set of new winter tires mounted on your stock rims, then save the stock summer tires. Get them remounted in the spring, or buy another set of rims that fit. You got options. New steelies with winter tires and 12 month financing is probably your easiest and safest bet though.

You spray oil on the bottom of the car. I made sure to get every bit of metal that I could hit with the spray gun. You can probably pick up an oil sprayer at harbor freight or somewhere for pretty cheap... It is definitely worth it. I save all of my used engine oil from my family's oil changes and use it to spray our cars.

Cool, thanks. I was hoping to find a set of steelies for under 100 bucks and get some winter tires on them ASAP.

Wouldnt that cause dirt and sand to stick to everything underneath? Like all the suspension etc would have a film and grime all over it...

Btw im on prius tires this winter as my winter dd truck is broken....this car is downright scary and i get stuck in my perfectly flat driveway ...i need my 4wd truck back!!!!

As far as I know, oil isn't going to hurt anything on your car.
