Everything went well with the install, until I torqued one of the 10mm bolts and it snapped off. Luckily my neighbor is a mechanic and was able to drill it and then tap it out. Including longer 10mm bolts is definitely a good idea.

Is this really a big issue? Now I don't know if I want to start the install until a real fix is in place. Grimspeed can you guys find a fix and ship it out to the people who've already purchased the product? Before we actually install the struts and have issues later? Now that would be real customer service!

It's not really a big issue, but it's obviously a bolt that's easy to over-torque if you're not careful. The kit that's currently on our BRZ has been uninstalled and reinstalled probably 20 times without any trouble. That said, we've ordered the black zinc hardware and will start including it with future kits when it arrives. If you can wait, I'd be happy to send you a pair.

It's a small bolt, I'm willing to bet factory torque value is under 20lb-ft. Always start by hand and don't tighten with a wrench until the bolt can't be hand tightened anymore. Should take more than a few turns by hand, otherwise you're crossthreading it.

Hey Matt, any chance you could let us know the specs you go with? I wouldn't be opposed to saving you the effort of sending them out if I can source the part from a local hardware shop.

Yeah I certainly can, its m6x1.00mm with a 20mm length, I recommend flanged if you can find it, or use a washer.

However, the issue isn't an inadequate amount of thread engagement, the issue appears to be over torquing the bolt. I can't necessarily solve people way over tightening, but I can prevent people potentially crossthreading the bolt and leading to them over torquing the bolt. A longer bolt will give a better chance to prevent this.

For now, just be careful to make sure you're not cross threading your factory bolt when you insert it, and do not torque it over 7.5ftlbs. 7.5ftlbs is next to nothing, the average human can exert almost twice that with a screwdriver. If you're using a ratchet, albeit small, it becomes extremely easy to bring this bolt past its yield point, its tiny!

If anyone is still having issues post up, or email us (engineering@grimmspeed.com), or give us a call 612-379-0000 and we'll get you taken care of.

*Edited suggested torque to reflect non-zinc plated stock bolts

What was easiest for me was to have the hood as high up as possible without the lower bracket lifting from one end or laying on the fender with the through hole misaligned. There's about a half cm of space near the top of the damper's stroke that allows you to properly locate the bolt.

We'll post up when we have the new bolts in hand, but at this moment the ETA is not known.

We'll be shipping them out in new kits, and to individuals who need them (broke a bolt from overtightening/crossthreading). We won't be shipping them to everyone who has already purchased the kit, because of how isolated the issue is and that almost all users have had no problems during the installation. Just let us know if you want or need them after we post up saying we've received the new bolts, and we'll send them out.

Again, for anyone who missed the previous post: Hand thread the bolt in, and then torque to 7.5ftlbs, and there should be no issue. However, if you're interested in sourcing the bolt before we can get them here, it will be a 6mmx1.00mm 20mm length flange bolt.

I haven't installed them yet. Waiting for warmer days and then I'll install the goodies I bought from you guys!

I don't even think my 3/8th torque wrench goes to 9ftlbs. Heh, I converted it to inch pounds, and that's 108inlbs. My 1/4in torque wrench has that.

EDIT: Now it's 90inlbs.

I just edited my post from 9ftlbs to 7.5ftlbs. I incorrectly used a modifier for zinc plated bolts (our new bolts) when I am fairly certain that the stock bolts are not coated. Sorry about that anyone who has read my posts in the last two hours!

Love you guys!
