IIRC elligability for import approval does go through chassis codes... For example, you can't import an Altezza under the SEVS scheme because SXE10 is the same chassis code as the IS200. You can personally import virtually any car, but it's much much harder than going through SEVS. (need to provide proof of residency in country of origin for 12 months, and proof that the car has actually been used [eg odometer readings] for a personal import)

Main reason cars are more expensive in AU is all about volume. It's why Commodores and Falcons have always been pretty good value for money, because traditionally (maybe not so much lately) they've shifted pretty high volumes, so they don't need to jack up the price to amortise the dev and production setup costs. It's true too that Aussies have a pretty high average wage, so if you think of every Aussie employed in the supply chain, it slowly adds up and does add considerable cost to the car.

For domestically produced cars there are design and production costs,
Imported cars have this as well, but there's pretty considerable shipping costs on top where they might save in design and production by doing it overseas,
There's lots in logistics and storage of the vehicles between the manufacturer and the dealer, dealer gets paid for storage costs too,
Advertising and marketing expenditure (very costly in Australia, we have pretty high CPMs compared to the rest of the world),
Mechanics to do pre-sale checks (their services are usually charged at $100+/hr at dealerships, but the mech will only see maybe $30/hr of that, haha),
You pay for a warranty too, believe it or not, and this cost will be determined on what the manufacturer believes they'll need to pay a dealership (based on that mechanic rate) on average for that car, and what they'll need to supply in parts
You also pay for those nice big shiny, well lit showrooms that ever dealer seems to have these days.

Just think about everything that happens when you buy a car. Nothing is free, and you need to pay for it all.

EDIT: Also is stuff like getting the car ADR approved, crash tested, etc, but this isn't that expensive if the car shifts any decent number of units. Still, something to be considered.

Virtually nil. They're the same powertrain on the same chassis and built on the same line; they'll have the same chassis code. Only things that differ will be panels and trim for the BRZ.

I'm not familiar with the early 90's alliance with Holden, but does anyone know if the chassis numbers of the Holden Nova / Toyota Corolla, Holden Apollo / Toyota Camry, or Holden Commodore / Toyota Lexcen match?

Eg is a Holden Nova an AE92-XXXXXXXXX

This may or may not be an indicator of how this FR-S BRZ alliance will work.

I'd be very surprised if the BRZ gets released here. Haven't been following what Subaru AU has been saying, but I don't think there's much of a market here for two cars that are virtually the same. In the US Scion and Subaru are heavily differentiated, but here Subaru is only a slight notch about above Toyota. That and the fact there's a much smaller market for sports cars, and Subaru really do love their All 4 the Driver mentality here.

Again, trying to figure out if my brain is working correctly or not, but the Toyota/Holden alliance shared chassis and engine codes of the original manufacturer. They had a build plate that matched the badging "manufacturer", but the chassis/engine numbers followed the same syntax.

Have you bought a new car in the last few years? The base model Impreza R, Subarus cheapest car, starts at around 26k. Even though this is their base, it's far from the same poverty-pack you get on a Corolla, Mazda 3, etc in the same size class that start around 20k. Interiors are a lot more solid too and have a more premium feel, in my opinion. The chrome against black works well to give this impression, common across a lot of their range (even the lower level stuff)

If you hadn't noticed too, Subaru actually have sports cars for sale in Australia.

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer to buy a Toyota over a Scoobie doo, but that's just the fact of the matter here in terms of positioning. Toyota make vanilla cars, but they sell because they're reliable and have few faults. Subaru sell based on the slightly-more-premium selection and AWD standard on all models.

if both FT86 and BRZ are selling here. i'd more likely to buy the Toyota becos i think it looks better, it's got the fixed price servicing lol (not that i'll get steeler to service my car). Toyota parts are usually cheap too.

Obviously Toyota have straight out confirmed the FT-86 will be sold in Australia but ive heard nothing at all since the beginnings that would hint the BRZ will be sold here??

I hope that both are available.... And that there is more in ways of options that differ the two... Not just the exterior aesthetics...

Looks like ill be one of very few to be waiting at the Toyota dealership the day they hit Perth going by the number of West Aus people on here.......

I saw a thing in the wheels magazine that said "expected cars" march/april BRZ and FT-86 so I dont know if they know something or are just speculating like everyone else?

We only have information confirmed that the car will be released in Australia in the 2nd Quarter of next year (probably April/May).
So still about 6 months away unfortunately.

There has been no further information on specifications but these are normally released to the dealer network around 2-3 months before the model is released. Keep an eye on John Mellor’s Goautonews (go to www.goautomedia.com to subscribe) as they are a good source of info and “leaks” from the manufacturers.

Pricing is still to be decided but I am sure they want to get to around $30000 start price for the base model car in the current market.
This is likely to be plus on road costs but it is still a great starting point.

This is from a dealer in QLD. Apparantly he had a meeting on Tuesday with some blokes from Toyota. In the last email I recieved from him, I asked him about the likely hood of different models in Aust. He said about there being a few models for Australia, but not as many as Japan (AWD, etc.). When I read that I sort of gathered he didn't know anything about the car. But the date reflects what Wheels Mag has said. However like me you should take his word with a grain of salt.

BTW that GoAuto site is quite useless.
