Iknow they have a 4.5L or something V8 Diesel that's somewhat newish and used in the Land Cruiser and 4runner variants overseas but its a weakling compared to the available Diesels from the US Big 3.

False. Toyota does make an uber powerful diesel: 8.0l turbo'd I6 (J08E: 300hp @ 2,500 rpm and 600 ft_lbs of torque @ 1,500 rpm). It's the exact engine they shoved into the Tundra I posted for the 2007 SEMA show.

Ah, thank you. I must have gotten the 6 from the I6

Given that 90% of these will never turn a tire off-road, it's perfectly ridiculous for full-size trucks these days to be so fricking HIGH. Particularly when the diff is still just 8" off the ground.

Small pic, but note size/height of full-sized truck vs. human. What is so much *better* about having a hoodline that's at your shoulders, and a bed that's higher than your waist?

Need to tow something big/heavy? OK, you need a relatively massive truck to do it with. But again, what's the benefit of the ridiculous height?

You can thank the American public for the changes in trucks and many other cars. Most have it in their mind that bigger is always better.

The 9-inch outcrop on the way to my campsite.

Yes, I could get out with a shovel and pile dirt on one side to lift my diff over the rock (and carry a repair kit in case I didn't), or I could buy a truck with more clearance.

But seriously, this is an argument over preference. There is no winning argument.

My point: the truck itself is MASSIVELY tall, without haveing a ground clearance payoff. diff looks to be no more than 8" off the deck. I.e., you'll hit the outcrop with this truck too.

As usual, what floods the market is what appeals most to big dumb heavy Americans: big dumb heavy cars/trucks/suvs...
Just expressing my frustration over these road-hogging view-blocking gas-guzzling monstrosities that are oversized far beyond the point of any additional real-world utility.

Looks nice! My buddy has the current gen Tundra and we took a road trip up to the Bay Area in that thing.

It's a nice and super comfy full size truck but it would complete overkill to own one. My Tacoma is more than enough truck for me.

God trucks are ridiculous these days. Where is my 80s Toyota "Truck"? Ford Ranger? You know, something where I don't need a front loader to put crap in the back? Something I don't mind using for doing dump runs, home depot runs and helping people move (see front loader comment)? I don't need to haul a space shuttle while sitting in my leather captains chair. Why isn't there a small truck with a small 4 banger diesel?

I totally agree with you. A small, simple truck (like a Ranger FX4 Level II or S-10 ZR-2 mixed with the likes of a simple Jeep Wrangler) powered by a small diesel (Kubota, Cummins, etc.) would be epic, and I'm sure they would sell well if marketed properly.

They should update the Tacoma also. Extremely outdated design that needs a change. I would like to see a normal size truck get some attention from the market.

Hey, I was being lazy one day and just watching TV. Then this guy appears and tells me to go ask any Toyota Tacoma owner this question.

Does it (Tacoma) have any limits?

Apparently it doesn't have any.

Those were the good ol days when trucks were just trucks w/out any luxury. I miss my '88 Toyota SR5 4x4 pickup. That thing was as raw as you can get with everything all manual. Gotta love the mini 4wd shifter!

Damn this brings back memories and looks very similar to my old truck!

The last gen Tacoma went from 1995-2004 so this current gen is definitely due. I bought mine the first year they came out (late 2004) and I think it has a classic look to it. I'm not a fan of the 2012 MY facelift.

Well, I'll be honest and say the composite bed, the bed rail and tailgate suck. Even though I haven't had any of my motorycles fall during transport, at times, I would see the actual rail and d clamp flex when I'm ratcheting it down.

Also on the double cab short bed, the back wheel of a moto would sit on the tailgate. Mine has bowed in the middle and I'm sure one of these days, it'll give out and it won't be pretty.

Here is an example since I have the same exact truck but no KTM.

this was the truck i first loved

i agree we do need the smaller trucks to come back.

honestly i figure a scion would be perfect for this role. a cheap compact truck that could be used for basic needs.

Scion xE?, scion xT? Scion SC-T(sport compact truck)

it could work.
