Similar but yours look a lot smaller then mine but at the same time mine are more pronounced where it creates a full circle around the whole rotor. I also noticed CSG_Mike and pcasso has them as well. If you look very carefully you also have 4 very small "indents" where the tips of the J-hooks end. I've look at other BBK that have similar vent/slots such as the Alcon hooks and they also create the same indents around the rotor so I'm not worried.

Oh yeah definitely not anything to worry about. Before Mike wasn't sure what you meant so I finally got around to taking a pic

Agreed...nothing to worry about on those minor grooves. I think I mentioned it before, but I've seen some competitors' discs that looked/felt like pringles chips when you ran your fingers across them. If you are tracking these kits, you're going to crack the discs before you ever wear them thin. That's the reality of it. I've owned several cars with big brake kits from various manufacturers, and I never once replaced a disc because of anything other than cracking.

Im amazed how much heat the AP'S can take. I have no cracks after COTA and this is a track that is hard on the brakes. I can tell you that a friend of mine with an S2000 Cracked 3 front rotors that weekend.

Here are my ap's at the end of the event:

Firstly apologies if this has been answered alsewhere already, but I tried looking but no luck, and recently posted a question on the bbk fitment database thread but got no answers.

So, i'd like to know if the essex sprint bbk kit will clear Work Kiwami 18x7.5 +38?

I haven't purchased the wheels yet so Im unable to check using the template. Any help would be appreciated.

I realise they opened up like that in the paddock, but the last time I saw someone crack then replace rotors over and over like that ... he finished up tearing a front corner right off the car while beside me.

Happily he was lucky and walked away. I hope your friend gets it sorted. That picture literally made my stomach turn.

As a track noob, what is the proper procedure for surviving a massive rotor failure like this?

I'm guessing they let out a massive shreak and vibration... so would you:
- gently slow down and coast to the pits
- lock brakes, stop immediately, get towed to pits
- get off course ASAP, try not to catch the grass on fire, get towed to pits
- try to maintain rotor temp so they don't crack open, casually drive to pits

You forgot the most important one, check your rotors before and after every session.

I'm guessing those rotors probably had some small fractures before the event or run. They got really hot and expanded. Then cooled down and those small fractures turned into what you see there. I don't think they catastrophically failed during a run or there would be a damage pic.

This AP kit seems like a real winner. If they fit my wheels, I'm definitely buying a set. If they don't fit my wheels I guess I have to get new wheels first eh?

Pcasso,
Your kit looks like it's doing great! The discs look excellent, and it's easy to see that you are getting some serious heat into those hats.

It's pretty amazing when you look at what a part designed for abuse can do vs. a part designed to be cheap! Tell your friend we have a solution for him as well: Our S2000 Competition Kit is very similar to our FT86 kit, except the discs are floating. We have a kit for both the AP1 and AP2. Thanks.

Yup, they turned into a beautiful eggplant color . Everybody at the track was admiring my brake system, specially since i could out brake almost every car . I was really surprised even with all the heat they generated that i did not get any brake fade what so ever, i really think that the Sprit Kit complemented with, AP Fluid, C300 Pads front, project Mu club racer rears made an excellent combo for the track. Now i need to call you and get some front extra rotors, rear rotors, another set of track pads. But first i need to get my wallet fat again since COTA drained it all
Jeff, what preventive maintenance for my calipers do you recommend after an event like that that. Should i take apart the caliper and give it a good cleaning after such a long event, or just brake cleaner and a pressure wash should do?

Watch the video, i had street compound R1R'S and all the cars you will see in the video were running full slicks and i could still catch them in the braking lap after lap, which means my AP's were being very consistent.

Nice work Mr. Casso! You were definitely sucking up on everyone under braking, and doing a great job keeping up overall. That was some serious iron out there, and it can be rather tough hanging with something that has almost triple the horsepower (particularly on a track wth long straights)...lol. If you were on a small track they could have been chasing you. I run into that in my Miata, which as about 95 whp. Even the FT86 has double the horsepower!

Nothing special needs to be done. This is the environment these brakes were made to tackle. I definitely wouldn't pull the calipers apart or anything like that.
  • I'd remove the pads...check how much you have remaining, look for any signs of odd wear, taper, etc.
  • When the pads are out, eyeball the pistons and make sure everything looks normal, no damage from debris, no leaks, etc.
  • You obviously blasted them with heat, so I'd also bleed the brakes and get some fresh high temp fluid in there.
  • When you're bleeding, inspect the brake lines at the caliper end and hard line end...again make sure everything looks tight and not leaking. Make sure when you're done bleeding that the pedal is firm, check for leaks, etc.
  • After you've bled the brakes and while you have the wheels off, clean everything with soap and water ...no need to pressure wash, etc.
  • Make sure your brake fluid reservoir is full with fresh fluid, and that the cap is back on properly.
That's about it. BTW, I love the sticker on the dash...too darn funny!

Give me a call for spares when you're ready. Those discs look like they still have a ton of life in them though. They're just getting broken in.
