In regards to parents providing brand new cars for their kids well people can and will do what they want but I think its not only a financially stupid Idea but doesn't teach "kid" to earn anything. Kids kill first cars. May as well start with something half way into the grave because it'll end up there quickly anyway. Being a very mechanically inclined guy if I had kids I'd use a fixer-upper to teach them how to maintain the vehicle as well. Skills that were passed to me by my Father and other highly experienced folks. Valuable skills that many people lack let alone care to have.

You missed the "teaching" part of my statement (financially wise). If you hand them whatever they ask for they never learn to plan and work and buy on their own.

I addressed you as "dude" but if you thought it like a "kid" Its because you're stance was and is very reminiscent of what I've been hearing from 17 yr olds since I was the same age. It never changes. Kids seem to think that because their parents have money that they should have full access to it. I think that's a load of crap. If someone wants money/stuff they should go out and earn it themselves. It builds personal character and a better society overall. Positive contribution vs expecting an effortless handout.

Call me what you want, all my stuff is bought and paid for by ME and I highly respect my parents for the lessons and common sense they taught me. The only vehicle I hadn't completely covered on my own was my first new bicycle around 8 yrs old. Went halves on it with Mom n Dad. Excellent lesson.. raked and shoveled my arse off to afford that bike and loved it like I'd made it from scratch.

It sounds to me that because YOU bought every car you had, that your hating on kids that get thier first car handed to them.. I got my first car through a will from my great grandmother.. Before she passed away but she couldn't drive so it was given to me 5 years early as she passed five years after I got it.. I had to pay for gas and insurance... My kids won't get a new car.. But they won't get a 1500$ beater, as that to me says you don't really care much about your kid.. Here is a 1500 beater, now run off into the world and hope you make it where ever your going.. I will get them something reliable.. It won't be new.. As of right now it looks like my daughter will get my dads 2012 Kia rio, that I'll pay off at that time in two years.. It's my dads commuter car as his 2010 dogde ram diesel uses to much fuel to drive the 75 miles each way... My son is getting my 66 beetle as that's what he has meantioned many times on wanting and has helped me build it.. They won't have gas and insurance paid for them either. They will pay that on thier own or not drive.. Making sure that they go off into the world with something that will be reliable to me is not spoiling them..

Are you expressing guilt or something? Your example is very specific and really doesn't apply. You didn't get a brand new car because you were whining about it and your parents caved. I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm hating on spoiled little shits that get EVERYTHING handed to them. Having to deal with them in the workforce later is like running a daycare center.

I've no intent to have children. Ever. /story. However that said, If I had kids.. NO.. I'd not send them out into the world WITHOUT the knowledge to be able to handle themselves or maintaining the necessary tools for life. The key to supporting is not letting them know there's support until they actually need it. Independence is built, not bought.

I drove $1500 beaters from 17 until my later 20's. Many of them were quite reliable with normal maintenance. I actually had some neat cars too. The lesson is that you get what you can AFFORD without help. Of course I'd help them if they needed it.. but no handouts unless its earned. I was raised that way as were many of my friends. We're all financially solid and steady in our adulthood because of those lessons.

I have a 240SX. I came from a 240SX forum called Zilvia. I'm still a member on Zilvia because I own a 240SX. I still drive my 240SX. People on Zilvia are unforgiving douche bags that will always throw the Google word at you when you ask a question and will flame you for every post you make. How do you get the respect on Zilvia? You must have a baller 240SX that's well built with a SR20 or a LS and it MUST MUST MUST have a nice paint job in 1 solid color! Don't forget that it must have the best suspensions up to date with the right rims that everyone in the forum can agree on. If not; you better put your flame-suit on.

That's where I come from. I urge FT86Club to not end up like Zilvia. I love my new FR-S/86

This forum isn't any more polite than any other car forum out there, we just have a very active team of moderators

But I'm continually surprised by the civil and generally kind responses that people give in threads that would normally (in other car forums I used to be a part of) generate all sorts of bashing or hate or mockery.

Wow, you must have come from some ****y forums in the past then, I've simply stopped posting due to the overwhelming amount of douchebaggery here.
Only reason I still visit is because its still the best source of information about the 86 unfortunately.

My thoughts exactly. Are there really parents who would give their teenage kids (especially daughters) a $1500 beater and then care less that it will not break down and leave them alone and stranded on the side of the road?

As mentioned in this thread there are many good people around but there are also many bad people who would show up in this situation.

Are these parents using the beater to teach their kids survival skills?

A beater can still be reliable. (does it need to be worth 1500$ no, but should it be more than 13k haha no way)
I honestly think its down right foolish to get your kid a super nice 1st car.
Why-Because no matter how well you passed your drivers ed test you are still learning! That car your parents spent a lot of money(or hell, even a little money on) is going to get messed up-whether its little dents or big.
This is common knowledge. Also pretty much every kid goes through a reckless stage-(on average)For men its going fast, and for women its not paying attention enough
I had my first car bought for me-Did I learn anything? No, Did my parents say Ashley save your money up? No-Why? Because they themselves do not know how to save. So All the money I made from 16-21 is completely gone, spent on stupid shit.
The things Ive learned now did not come from them buying me shit, it came from me looking at their mistakes-as well as others around me and realizing I didn't want to end up like that. (there are a lot of other factors as well, but in a nut shell I finally have goals in life, which I never did before)
I had a friend total 2 cars within 4 years cause hes just that stupid. What did his parents do? Buy him a new car(and they don't even have that kind of $) Hell I know a ton of people my age who either totaled or royally messed up their first cars-sometimes 2nd.
Can a 30yr old mess up their car?-you sure bet.
But is it as common as a first driver? No.
Its unnecessary, its also stupid to get your gown child one as well.
How can you build credit if your parents are constantly buying you everything? What about job experience? Learning about finances? Truly appreciating what you have? Just work ethic in general?
Sit down and really think about it, what kind of skills is your child learning by sitting back and saying "wow thank you so much"

I'm not trying to argue, I cant go up to random people and be like "Don't spend money on your child" lol
But what I can say is that you are hurting them if you help them with 100% of everything.
Imo -1st half decent car/maintaining a job from 16 on/paying at least some bills/help pay for school should be parents #1 priority as well as the kid.
After grad school that kid will make the kind of income to afford a nice new car-And they can also move out as well, with a basic knowledge of the stuff I listed above!
In my eyes that seems like a happy balance between getting help & than becoming an adult.

I bought my first car (new '85 VW GTI $13,000.00 tax inc) with money saved from $1000.00 savings bonds my grandmother used to give us yearly for a number of years as well as whatever I managed to put away. I totalled that car a year later and eventually left school partly because I didnt have a financial safety cushion any more. Live and learn. If I was my dad I would have made me buy a lightly used Tercel for $6K and save the rest for school!

I also gave 5 years of my time to Uncle Sam because even freedom isn't free.

Free shit has hidden ties.. ties I dont want.

In regards to kids getting handed $40K cars.. Jealous is not the feeling I have here, its pitty more or less. Because they'll fail at life as soon as Mummy and Daddy aren't there to pay the bills.

Posting here more than once.. lmfao.. its a web forum. Posting is what people do on web forums. Aimlessly in most cases. Who cares?

When did "dude" suddenly become derogatory? I use it only as a friendly term. It's way more respectful than "kid," "son," or "punk."

right!? I'm really not sure why he got offended. I mean I know I'm not the most talented guy when it comes to text communications but I didn't think I was being insulting using the term "dude"
