Best Oil to use on the 86

Those that have changed oil already, have you noticed a different feel to the ride.
I am finding the engine smoother, gear changing easier and the cut in revs while idling gone. Not sure if this is due to oil change or car has run in over 8000km.

I also experienced easier gear changes after the service. This makes no sense as engine oil should not have an impact on gear changes but it does feel slightly better.

nope cant say i have noticed anything different whatsoever... i lie... theres a thousand rond less available on my credit card... and a little bottle lying in my spare wheel... thats it...

Update on coolant! Spoke to Subaru in Bruma. The guy says they use a Liqui Moly G11 across their range. I'd like to go in and have a look at a bottle when I have a chance to see which one exactly and then buy a bottle.

Hey guys is it okay to change the oil filter without an oil change ? I got the TRD one on discount ~ and wondering if I should put it on now or wait till service time ?!

no problem at all. I did a oil change they put the std oil filter in, 2 weeks later I changed to the TRD.
I'm sure you have changed before, if not best to do it in the morning while cold. Fill the TRD filter with oil up to half way, let it stand for 15 minutes or so to allow to absorb into the filters, then install. Remember to put some oil on the rubber seal before installing to seal properly.

TRD oil filter gives extra 5kw power, so be careful when accelerating off....

It's called 'priming the oil filter'. I usually fill the oil filter completely, wait a second or 3 to let the oil make its way down to the bottom of the filter, then continue to do this until the filter is completely full.

I was instructed to do this by my engineer friend that builds race motors. He said I should also do it on normal cars. This way your oil pressure doesn't take long to rise to normal. Oil pressure is almost immediate on a fully primed filter.
Only thing is, on the 86 it's upside down, so you need to install it quickly. Maybe don't fill it all the way to the brim.

Just to clarify one last time. If we haven't had an oil change, we should top up with 0w20 right ?

You can use 5w30 if its just a top-up. (We don't need the zero cold tempature viscosity cause we don't have minus 15 degree temperatures like in the northern hemisphere)

I spoke to friend of mine that has an Impreza STi. He says scooby motors love fluids. Both oil and coolant. So I reckon we need to always keep a bottle of each in stock.

Was going through the manual yesterday - there's an interesting comment in there.

It says that you can use 5w30 if 0w20 is not available , but then you should change to 0w20 as soon as possible after that. The manual is a worldwide manual so possibly a generalization.

I know that the current move to 0w20 is partly because of fuel economy - standards like CAFE in the US are forcing manufacturers to do this even thought the fuel economy gains are like 1%.
