Best Oil to use on the 86
 

Hi guys

After filling up last night, I decided to check oil and water. The water was fine but oil was a pint short. I then put in synthetic oil which costs R52 a pint.

Firstly not sure if I put in the correct oil?
Secondly, is it normal to fill oil as my car has done 5000kms now?
Lastly, what is the best oil to use on the 86?

I'll really appreciate feedback regarding this topic as I'm struggling to find a thread regarding this issue

My previous gen Forester used oil until around 20 k km, then I never had to top up until I sold her @ around 90k km. The nice thing was that she also went a lot better after around 20k km. So its probably a boxer engine thing.

Can we not drive to the nearest Toyota and tell them to top up as part of our service plan ?

Indeed drive to the Toyota you purchased your car from and ask what oil was used, to ensure you match oil top ups. As far as I recall, it is not advisable to mix synthetic oil with standard or part synthetic.
0w20 synthetic is what I see posted in the forum.
Once your dealer has advised what oil to use, buy a 5L for top ups as some garages may not stock synthetic.

But why do we need to buy the oil? ... Should this not form part of maintenance / service on the car which fall under the service plan and thus is free ? :(

Top up oil is not included in a service plan. In fact, I think even maintenance plan excludes "tyres & top up oil".

I'm nearing 6000km and no need for topping up yet.

Best oil for me would be Mobil 1 , but if you're topping up I'd rather put in what they filled originally.

Each dealership is contracted to a certain oil company, which in most cases will be Total, BP, Castrol or OEM.

Also be careful of what oil type appears on the invoice after servicing. I have had that happen where the old part code was Engen Xtreme 15W40 where in fact they were using Total. (Rand Stadium Lexus)...

Problem is that we might not be able to source what they've used at the factory in Japan?

Apparently OEM 0w20 used worldwide.
Worthwhile a visit and obtain answers, as all we need is a mechanic replacing with multi grade as he has never seen a 86 in the workshop.

Eish true! Also, 0W20 is surely a bit thin for SA use where it doesn't get as cold? I would think something like 5W30 would be better.

why look further than subaru's 0w20?
