I paid invoice.. plus the dealer's $250 paperwork fee..

I have a question.. Why would anyone pay for the car in full or even put any money down when they can get 1.49% financing. Surely you can find better uses for your money.. . I'll borrow as much money as they will give me at 1.49%.. it's less than inflation. 1.49% on $30k is like $37 in interest per month...

Now.. back when rates were 6-7% for a normal car loan.. I could see wanting to avoid the interest.. but now??

oh well.. whatever..

Totally not relevant to the thread, but here's a little perspective for you U.S. folks.
  • Driveaway price AU$39,381.09

  • 39,381.09 AUD = $40,957.85 USD
  • 1 AUD = 1.04004 USD
  • 1 USD = 0.961503 AUD

Unless you have an investment option that gives more than the 1.49%, it won't do you any good. And any investment under the rate of inflation is actually not an investment but more of a "cutting losses" scenario.

I'd already saved up more than 30k over a few years to buy this car. But even in a high yield savings account I was only getting about 1.1%, and I didn't want it in a longer term investment as I wasn't sure of the timing on actually buying the car, 2-4 years? Who knew at the time.

So if I did a 1.49% loan on top of that, I'd break even so to speak against inflation, paying it all off right now does save me some money. That $30 a month will now go back into my IRA for example which does have a greater than inflation return.

Then the wife decides to buy a mustang and my carefully planned finances go to shit...such is life.

Hate to bring back a dead thread like this, but I am currently negotiating terms on a new CBS BRZ Limited 6mt. Right now I am getting 2700 for my 2001 Civic ex with 155k miles on it (this is 1k over kbb for its condition) and got $500 off of msrp. I could not get them to come down on MSRP any more but I was able to get them to throw in two years comprehensive maintenance for oil, brakes, and scheduled maintenance.

So... should I go for it or do you all think I can get better from somewhere else?

FYI, i got my BRZ limited $750 BELOW MSRP.

The answers you get to your question won't really give you what you're looking for. Not too many guys that let themselves get shafted and ended up overpaying for their cars are going to come on here and admit it.

Not totally true since there have been some guys admitting here that they only paid 3k over sticker.

These cars can be purchased for MSRP or lower.

Really not sure, my wife beat them down on price and then added I believe every warranty they offered under the sun. I really am afraid to see what the end number was. lol (she says since we keep cars for so long matter as well cover everything.)

As I said before I was not going to buy the car just check out the color and then order the next model year, but Joe the salesman and my wife sold me WRB BRZ

My only point was that "all" who got a bargain will brag about it. Only "some" who over paid will admit it. The two together won't average out.

I say pay what you feel comfortable with, if you feel like you are not getting everything you paid for, walk. Some people will go to lengths for a great deal, but live with the hassles of price wars, others just want the car and convenience of walking into any dealer and just paying the asking price. To each their own, as long as you are happy.

That being said, I am somewhat of a cheap bastard... LOL

I paid $27,162 + $499 Dealer fees, but have to deal with what some people consider a hassle from buying a car out of state. For me personally, it was the funnest car purchasing experience I ever had. (+$124) Flew out to CO, from CA, then drove the car all the way back, with a one night hotel stay (+60). I have 2 months on CO temp reg before I even have to pay CA tax and license. DMV requires I need to smog the vehicle before I apply, which is another +$40. I don't count gas and food since I use those while I am sitting here everyday. So before tax and license OTD, I have invested $27,885 for a Limited BRZ 1B package and Chrome Fuel Door. I'll try to remember when I pay my tax and license to give a true OTD, but that is my OTD so far....

Oh, no doubt. I'm not disagreeing with you at all. It just kills me when people pay over MSRP on these cars. It's unfortunate for everyone.

I posted that ages ago lol, congrats on your discount!
Also realized that up north, like CT, NH area (including Toronto I guess) have BRZ's on the lot due to the geographical region, not as many people are keen on RWD's, so they will give discounts there. GL anywhere else where there's huge demand though.
