Had my first snow experience today and with winter tires there is nothing to worry about. I was a bit nervous as this is my first RWD car but it handled better than any of my previous fwd cars with all seasons and was easy to control when I purposely made the tail slide out.

Almost everyone is struggling to drive properly out there right now (mostly because PA drivers don't know what they're doing in snow but I digress) but my BRZ took it just fine. Just start up calmly I got going every time.

I wish I could see the terrified look on peoples faces when my back end does step out a tiny bit... " OH NO HE'S GONNA DIE!!!!!!!"
I was driving on 581 on Thursday morning, after the random light dusting we got, and had the back end slip a little on me. It was hilarious how far back the car that was only about 2 car lengths prior had dropped back. Yesterday it took me about 7 tries to get a proper run up my driveway. Half of those were because it started to drift sideways and was going to hit the rear inside the opening.

In the closet?? Now is a good time to sell them. But not for me, my BRZ is in hibernation for the winter.

Wait...you telling me that you have been driving around in the snow with the stock summer tires?????

I just drove mine with the summer tires in one inch of snow for the first time to see how it would handle. It was fine at 20 mph around my neighborhood but would not want to take it out on the road!

Yea my summers are still on. I even drove with them down to atlanta 1100 miles each way through the snowy mountains. Now prob. I think it all depends on the driver, when the tail kicks out some people get scared... I just ride it out.

Exactly. Do not over correct the car, it wants to go straight so let it catch. There was a point when I was doing subtle corrections as it was swaying side to side going 10 MPH and I held the wheel straight slight brake, put it up a gear for lower power (wheel spin) and it caught and I was good. Just a little something I have caught onto over the years.

It all depends on how you drive it. I have Blizzak WS-60's on mine. I still think the car is pretty bad in the snow, especially because my 2 cars before this had AWD.

All inputs to the car just need to be smoother and more gradual. If you get on the gas too quickly, the car will break loose even with winter tires. When the car does break loose though, I feel that it is very predictable and controllable. Just leave TCS on and drive carefully, I don't want to see a bunch of the twins in a junkyard so soon!

...umm, no. All season tires are intended for exactly that...all seasons. But, as they're a compromise tire, many have taken to make them better in Spring/Summer/Fall than in winter. Especially with the advent of more AWD cars and traction control being mandatory on all cars these days. But for sure, "all season" tires are intended to be driven in winter as well.

Tires are designed for a certain temperature range. Summer tires are better when it's warmer, winter tires are better when it's at or below freezing. All seasons are that mid-range (spring & fall) where if they get too warm they suck, too cold they suck.

On a 2WD car, it is necessary to get proper winter tires if/when your average temperatures are at or below freezing.

I'm not sure of the exact temperatures since it can vary with different models of tires. It can also varie by manufacturer too.

Those don't help one bit when one needs to slow down. Even worse, it creates a false sense of grip on acceleration, increasing the perceived 'safe' speed.

It really depends what your 4th season is like. The colder the weather the harder the rubber gets and the less traction you have.

The difference in stopping on snow and ice (especially in plummeting temperatures) is quite dramatic.

I personally don't need winter tires since it doesn't get cold enough here to require them over all seasons. But with that said, I always put them on regardless. Winter tires are less of an expense than the toll of having to live with the fact that you maybe injured or killed somebody in an accident due to trying to save a few bucks.

$750.00 to $1000.00 dollars a few bucks? (a.s.) will cut it if ya just need to get home and get out of a storm, then just wait for the roads to be plowed, before venturing out again.i can do this as i am retired would "never " buy dedicated snows.don't need,or want 'em! waste of money for me,especially when you end up traveling most of the time on bare asphalt,as they just wear out prematurely anyway!,and ya just give the money away! f**k that! just sayin' ehe! he! he!
