Someone didn't read the links

Phones bought up until midnight tonight can be unlocked legally.

Meh. I'm on Verizon right now so it doesn't matter.

I wouldn't have a problem with them not letting you unlock phones that you bought on contract, except for the fact that they don't lower your monthly charge if you bring your own phone in and use it. That kind of blows the whole, "They're recouping the money they spent on subsidizing your phone" reasoning out of the water. It is obviously subsidized, but they make no mention of fees associated with that in the contracts and no differentiation between on contract and off contract monthly prices so it seems a bit flimsy to make the consumer do so.

For the record, you can still root and unlock bootloaders etc., you just can't unlock the SIM to go to a different carrier.

So people who want an unlocked phone will actually have to pay for an unlocked phone instead of the carrier's charity to them via the subsidy?

Not sure why I care. If I want an unlocked phone I'll just buy one unlocked.

Agreed. The more I read into this, the more I feel like this is much ado about nothing.

Seems like this will be less of an issue going forward as most Android manufacturers seem to be moving towards having unlocked or officially unlockable no-contract versions of their phones in the future.

I hate Apple so I don't really keep up with their side of things. Will they sell you a non-tethered to a carrier iPhone at full price?

The librarian of congress only interpreters the law for informational purposes. They didn't pass the DMCA and don't enforce it. When someone goes to court over unlocking is the real test.

The DCMA is a bad piece of legislation. To say it over reaches is being generous. Prosecution under the DCMA often fails.
