My 05 Mustang had it. Ford, however, is more blunt in the owner's manual. They say the data can be accessed by law enforcement if needed. So if your 'event' totals your car the data leading up to the 'event' can be looked at and your claim that you weren't going 97 in a 35 MPH zone before you plowed into a wall won't really hold up.

The box is under the center consol. It is integrated in the airbag control module (ACM). If you remove it or disable it, your airbags will not deploy in the event of a crash.
I'm sure the brz has it, the Bosch tool (or any other commercially available tool) cannot download the brz to date ... This could and probably will change in the relatively near future |

Something like 96% of brand new cars have some type of 'black box' device. Soon it's going to be mandated (like TCS is) on all cars.

I love this.
Literally 99/100 of the unintended acceleration cases were people with their foot on the wrong damn pedal. Shutting them up and shutting their ridiculous lawsuits down will go a long way to lowering vehicle prices.... Haha, I can't keep a straight face. They will save money and pocket the difference. The auto makers pretend they don't want this, but nobody wants to be the next Toyota, quibbling in court over some he said she said crap with $100 million at stake. |

I saw an earlier post were people were upset about the EDRs being installed in the FRS's. These are similar to black boxes in planes that record certain data during a wreck. Like how fast you were going. Did you hit the brakes. That kind of thing. Now these boxes are more common in cars. However, now a federal law is about to go into effect to mandate them in all cars. I work in the computer field and a concern with this is that this law does not specify certain restrictions. For now they only collect data and do not record sound. However, there is nothing in the regulation that says it is never to allowed recording of sound nor that they can never add a gps. Some people in the computer field are afraid that it is a way to get around the requirement to go before a judge to have a wire tap or have them follow your activity on your gps. Some people feel it is the problem of putting forth technology without looking at the ramifications.
If you want to comment on this federal regulation you may go to http://www.hslda.org/docs/news/2013/201301180.asp to submit your opinion till Feb 11th. |

Funny how we all object to these intrusions looking over our shoulders. However, keep in mind that in any case where the data is being examined, there will be two parties involved and the goal is to arrive at a fair and legal judgement. If I were the agrieved party and suing you, I would welcome the data.
Me. I hate the freaking things and see a lucrative market for anyone that can figure how to spoof the program to only store fractions of a second of data or a constant loop of sedate and responsible vehicle activity. |
